The difficult commercial conditions, caused by strong competition in the Retail Sector, the increase in electronic commerce (known as the “Amazon effect”) and rising rental costs are acting as a “driving factor” for retailers Adopt Internet of Things platforms.
So much so that, according to a new study by Juniper Research, revenues generated by retail platforms based on IoT will exceed 4,300 million dollars in 2023,compared to 890 million estimated for this 2018.
The research also found that the implementation of the IoT platform will allow retailers to unlock efficiencies , particularly in the supply chain, which will improve operating margins. Juniper anticipates that this boost to efficiency will raise the total number of assets connected to the IoT platform to almost 25,000 million units in the retail sector by 2023, compared to just over 5,000 million in 2018.
If we take a look at the connectivity technologies that will support this rise of the Internet of Things in our stores, radio frequency (RFID) systems will continue to have the greatest impact in the commercial space . In that sense, retailers have implemented various technologies, “based on factors such as technological clarity, cost barriers and existing implementations,” reads the study.
This is due to the positive impact that the implementation of RFID can have, not only in logistics and storage operations, but also as part of the “Just Walk Out” shopping experiences (Amazon Go) . The analysts also determine that the technologies of optimization of resources and heat sensors are highly mature and disruptive.
