Microsoft announces Windows Sandbox, an environment to run applications

Microsoft announces Windows Sandbox, an environment to run applications in a secure and isolated manner.

Many times we have found ourselves in doubt about whether or not to run a recently downloaded application for fear of encountering malware. Now perhaps that doubt reappears every so often, but luckily Microsoft has found a practical solution through Windows Sandbox, a temporary desktop environment that serves to run applications safely and completely isolated.

This environment as I said is temporary, if they encounter malware does not allow it to leave that environment, so it can not affect everything else in Windows and once it is closed, the software installed and executed, more all its files and statuses are permanently deleted.

In addition to the situation I named at the beginning, the question of running or not unknown software, Windows Sandbox is also useful when you have to try something and need a clean installation of Windows. With this new environment they will no longer need to create a virtual machine, everything they have to run can run in the Sandbox as if they did in a new virtual machine.

According to Microsoft, Windows Sandbox has the following properties:

  • It is part of Windows: everything that is required for this feature is included with Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. It is not necessary to download a VHD.
  • Pristine: every time you run Windows Sandbox, it’s as clean as a completely new installation of Windows.
  • Disposable: nothing persists in the device; Everything is discarded after closing the application.
  • Secure: uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation, which is based on the Microsoft hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates the Windows Sandbox from the host.
  • Efficient: uses an integrated kernel scheduler, intelligent memory management and virtual GPU

Unfortunately to use Windows Sandbox we must wait a bit because it will be available first for Windows Insiders through Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise Build 18305, which is not yet available.
