90 with 90: Oracle Open World and the Future of Cloud Technology

In 90 with 90, 90octane team members discuss marketing insights in under 90 seconds. This video is a 90 with 90 plus, featuring four of our team members sharing their takeaways from this month’s Oracle Open World in San Francisco. Watch to hear what they learned about Cloud Technology and artificial intelligence, as well as fun real-world applications like brewing beer using IoT sensors and the cloud. For more on the future of cloud tech, AI and machine learning, as well as what Larry Ellison revealed in his keynote, read the article below.

Oracle Open World mixes cloud technology, artificial intelligence and beer

At 90octane, we’re lucky to work with a variety of companies, including some technology heavyweights like Oracle. And since doing high-quality work for clients means understanding where their business is now and where it’s headed, those of us who work with Oracle Cloud Technology visited San Francisco this month for Oracle’s annual Open World conference.

Not only did we attend sessions and keynotes on hot new developments in cloud technology, but we also experienced cloud tech in action. We tasted craft beers brewed using IoT sensors and the cloud, conversed with an Artificial Intelligence-powered robot and controlled Lego Mindstorm robots by tweeting at them.

The cloud-crafted beer provided the best (and tastiest) example. Using IoT-enabled sensors for temperature, flow, pressure and other key measurements, the tanks and kettles relayed data to the cloud to alert the brewers when to move the beer through the brewing process, eliminating human guesswork. As users sampled and rated the beers on a custom app, the brewers optimized the brewing process based on the beers that scored highest. Turns out cloud technology is delicious, at least when it takes the form of the “Dark Side Stout” or “Open World IPA.”

On a more sober note, the powerful potential of AI and machine learning jumped out at us as one of the biggest takeaways from the conference. One highlight was a keynote from Oracle founder Larry Ellison, in which he announced Oracle’s introduction of the first automated database and development of automated IT security powered by machine learning and AI.

Machine learning is not a new development, but due to advancements in compute power and data availability, it now has the power to revolutionize cloud technology. In addition to its groundbreaking application to database automation and IT security, machine learning and AI will also change the game for marketing automation and personalization.

Oracle customers like Spotify can use machine learning to analyze your music preferences and predict the perfect playlist, and Levi’s is using it to provide a highly personalized, cohesive customer experience from brick and mortar to digital. Machine learning is even in experimental phases for detecting cancer in humans by identifying patterns in blood and MRI scans.

At Oracle Open World, we got a glimpse into what’s now and what’s next in cloud tech—and our team members managed quick escapes to visit a redwood forest, cycle up Mount Tam and slap Hopper’s Hands on a run to the Golden Gate Bridge.
