You may have viewed the title of this post and wonder if I am having some typing challenges. All is okay, or at least that is what I tell myself…

At the northeast corner of Lake Carlos there is what most everyone, including myself, refers to as the Lake Carlos dam. But, it is actually a Weir. One definition of a weir is “a low dam built across a river to raise the level of water upstream or regulate its flow“. In this case it is water from The Chain exiting into the Long Prairie River.

The weir is looking quite different as you will see in the video I shot with my iPhone yesterday. It was an iron barrier and it has been replaced by rock arch rapids. In short, a rock ramp that elongate a vertical drop and gradually step it done. It was done as part of the barrier was failing and the result was more water flowing into the Long Prairie river than desired.
