The Brittle Sea: 2nd Draft Progress #6: Dedication

As I said in a previous piece, I have no experience of a court of law, so writing a courtroom scene has proved and is proving problematic. I’m getting there, slowly but surely.

What I do have experience in, and very recently, is a stay in hospital for broken ribs. I know what it’s like to be unable to breath, having broken seven ribs in an accident on some rocks. My immediate problem once the accident had occurred was not being able to breath. A below normal blood oxygen level is called hypoxemia, which is a cause for concern if it’s too low. Normal is 95-100% and mine was 70% when I was first admitted. If this low level had not been reversed it could have led to complications in the body tissue and organs could have begun to shut down. Luckily it was sorted out, though my release from hospital was delayed by several days because of this problem.

For this reason and in light of what is going on in the world I have made The Brittle Sea dedication a special dedication.

To all medics and health workers in the world as well as the police and civil authorities who have worked at the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.
This book is dedicated to you.

This is one scene that I had no trouble writing and is, I think, the most important passage in the book, bar none.
