Over 1000 people displaced, in rainstorm

In a Rain Storm in 3 communities Kanshegu, Nyoglo and Balshie, in Savelugu Municipality in Northern Region on Saturday, May 7 about 100 houses were destroyed, 1000 people were rendered homeless and now residing with relatives and friends.
About 7 people sustained several degrees of injuries including one had a fracture on the arms while 2 persons who had fractures on their legs.

The injured people were sent to the hospital for treatment. The palace at Kanshegu chief, 2 School buildings, houses and private buildings are affected with this storm.

Speaking to the media, Haruna Musah, the principal disaster control officer of the Municipality, said that they could not instantly assist the sufferers with any material adding that “we are handicapped and have practically nothing in stock.

He said that he would call the Regional officer “to come to their help but we cannot do anything.

The headmaster of Kanshegu English and Arabic school, Sanyare Paul told the media that the disaster will affect educational performances of the school pointing out that schools will continue for the 3rd term next Tuesday.

He requested to the Assembly, NGOs, and NADMO to come to their help “as a matter of urgency to roof of the school”.
According to him, the rain storm started on Friday night and caused the disaster.

Mr. Iddrisu speaks that the rest of the families were out of danger “except that we lost our private property and some part of the house.”

AME Zion Primary at Nyoglo also had its building collapse. Alidu seidu, the Head teacher of the school, grieved by saying that the school has no trees for pupils and teachers to use when school carry on next Tuesday and said he would ask the PTA for the necessary steps to be taken in the interim

Some of the victims were rescuing their property at the time media got there.
