Film makers in Brong Ahafo goes wild over influx of telenovelas

Film-makers in the Brong Ahafo Region are discontented as the number of telenovelas shown on Ghanaian television stations are on the increase.

Some of the film-makers speaking in an interview on Sunyani-based Angel FM which was monitored by the News Hunter Magazine called on the Ghanaian government to put measures in place to revive the movie industry which is collapsing.

“These series are affecting many people. Some of the series are being translated into our local language but the way they act differs from our culture. Our language is our culture…so why are we not promoting ourselves instead of carrying huge sums of money to promote the culture of others,” said Mrs. Patience Kumi of Paykus Ventures.

“The influx of these telenovalas is collapsing our businesses. The time that people will use to watch local movies is the same time that these soap operas are being shown. The culture that they are selling to Ghanaians is not needed because Ghanaians won’t learn anything from it. Sales are going down because of Kumkum Bagya and others.

“I do not understand why they are now translating it into twi. The movie industry is gradually collapsing and government should do something about it. At first one would be able to sell 20,000 copies of local movies in the first week after production, but that is not the case now. Nowadays you won’t be able to sell even 5,000 copies,” Nana Wusu of Nana Wusu Productions on his part, disclosed.
