Locke and Key Season 1 Recap

The first season of Locke and Key starts off with the drastic murder of Rendell Locke in the hands of Sam Lesser, who is seeking out information about Rendell’s place- the Keyhouse. After Rendell’s death, we see his children- Tyler, Kinsey and Bode along with his wife, Nina move to the Keyhouse. They are welcomed by Rendell’s brother, Duncan to their ancestral place.

With a lot of questions about their father’s death haunting them, the children and Nina start exploring Keyhouse. Bode, the youngest of the Locke children comes across the well house where he shouts inside the well to get a response from a trapped prisoner in the well- Dodge. She tells Bode about the keys and soon enough he and his other siblings start finding magical keys in the nooks and corners of the Keyhouse. From the head key to the ghost key, the children start using the magical keys to know more about them.

While teaching his mother about the keys, Bode uses the mirror key that traps Nina inside a mirror and is unable to get out. He rushes to the well house to seek Dodge’s help to save Nina but, Dodge instead asks him for the Anywhere Key (a key that can take you anywhere) in return. However, after receiving the Anywhere Key, Dodge deceives Bode and disappears. Ultimately, Nina is saved from the mirror world by the children.

Meanwhile, Kinsey meets a new group of people in her high school, who she befriends. The group is shooting for a movie and Kinsey plays an important role in it. She meets another new student there called Gabe and quickly the two start seeing each other. Although, Kinsey harbours feelings for her other friend Scot and visa versa. They are bullied by Eden in school, a typical mean girl. But, Kinsey uses her magical keys to get back at Eden soon. Tyler, on the other hand, is apprehensive about the powerfulness of the keys.

Dodge soon returns to the Keyhouse for the rest of the keys. She is evil and tries to harm the kids for the keys. However, Bode realizes that Dodge cannot really take the key away from the Lockes but, needs to be given, which gives the children the upper edge. Dodge seeks help from Sam Lesser later to threaten the kids and get the keys. But, the entire plan flops and Dodge ends up killing Lesser.

However, Lesser’s ghost escapes, unwittingly using the Ghost Key and is stuck as a spirit in the waking world. Dodge gets hold of the Shadow Key and the Crown of Shadows making shadows come to life and attacking the Locke family. Bode cleverly deduces the use of light might be able to save them and he uses a lightsaber toy to stab Dodge which makes her unconcious. Tyler and Kinsey along with their friends head to the caves where rests the Black Door from where the iron for the key comes to forge the keys.

Tyler with Duncan perfects making the Omega Key to open the door and they all toss in the unconcious Dodge in the cave. However, when the gate is open glowing bullets start heading towards them, which can turn them into demons. Everyone except Eden is safe from the bullets. Although, Eden does not reveal that she has been hit.

After all the events are wrapped up, Bode inquires about Dodge and if Kinsey and Tyler are sure that Dodge is gone. In a flashback, we see that the person thrown in the cave was actually Ellie (Rendell’s old friend and someone who has been helping the kids with the keys) as Dodge had used the Face Key to make Ellie look like her. So, the unconcious body was Ellie’s and not Dodge’s. It is also revealed that Gabe is actually Dodge, who had turned into the character using the Identity Key to come closer to Kinsey and the Lockes.

Locke and Key Season 2 takes a more emotional turn with the villians seemingly away. It was discovered in the previous season that you forget about the Keys once you become an adult which is why Nina and Duncan and, soon Tyler and his girlfriend will forget about the keys and all the expereinces they’ve had with them. They create a key to make sure adults remember and try it first on Duncan.

The keys and the demons are made of the same thing, the glowing metal bullets coming out of the Black Door. We see Gabe and Eden pair up to collect these bullets and forge their own keys. Through the Head Key, Kinsey finds out that Gabe is actually Dodge in disguise and Eden was hit by a glowing bullet and has turned into a demon. They also realize that they threw Ellie through the Black Door. Meanwhile, Ellie manages to escape from the demon pit.

The Locke children get into a fight with Eden and Dodge playing Gabe as the latter two kidnap Duncan to make more keys. Tyler’s girlfriend ends up turning into a demon and due to the pain he forges a new key that takes away the demon from the soul and turns the person back into a human. But, on using it on his girlfriend, Jackie, she dies.

A final battle soon enrages where Dodge/Gabe kidnaps Kinsey for her to join the demons but, she resists as Duncan, Tyler and Scot go to her rescue. But, using the key that killed Jackie, Tyler thinks of using it on Dodge/Gabe and it destroy the demon. They get the Identity Key and give it to Ellie to turn back into her real self.

The season ends with Tyler leaving for college but, not using the key they forged to remember on him. After his experiences, he rather forget about it all. However, Bode uses the key on his mother to keep her in loop and make her remember all her experiences with the keys which she forgets because she is an adult. After Dodge’s disappearance, we see Eden take in-charge and bring the demon on Captain Ferderick Gideon to the world. But, he traps her in the well house after she has done the work.
