8 Ways to Increase Your Email Open Rates

Here is the bottom line for you to get clicks first you need to have your Emails opened. I get hundreds of emails everyday and I must say I don't open all of them. In fact I probably have over 1,500 emails sitting in my inbox right now.
Most of these emails have a lot of meaning behind them, whether it is a service I subscribed to or some reaching out to me with great content they feel would benefit me to read. Whatever the case, each one represents someone who tried and failed to get in contact with me.
Now, maybe you’re not like me. Maybe you open all of your emails regardless of if you’re interested, simply so you can decrease that “unread emails” number in your inbox.
Inevitably, some of your Subscribers will do this same thing. But the whole purpose of this blog post is to cover how to get people to open your emails because they have a vested interest in hearing from you.
Here are 8 Crucial Ways to Increase Your Email Open Rates and how to peak subscribers interest before they open your emails.
1. Send a welcome email.
This is probably the most obvious thing to do with email marketing but believe it or not most marketers forget this step altogether. Not only do welcome emails let your new subscriber know who they are dealing with, it is also a great way to train them to make sure your emails reach there inbox. After you welcome them to your newsletter give them simple instructions on what to do next.
* Step One - Tell them to mark your welcome letter as important.
* Step Two - Tell them to add you as a contact. For example tell them to add your first and last name and the primary email you will be using to send them updates.
* Step Three - Remind them to check there promotions tab. If your emails land in there promotions tab they need to move them to there inbox. This will tell there email provider that your emails are priority.
2. Spend more time on awesome subject lines.
You’ve probably heard this one before. But it’s still the single most important part of any email marketing message that you write by far. This is the first thing people see when the receive an email right next to your name.
The subject line is your opportunity to grab attention. If you have someones attention they are going to open your email. Unfortunately, most of us use basic boring subject lines.
To improve the quality of your subject lines, create a list of 20 different options. Read through them and pick your top 10. Read through them again and pick your top 5. Read through them one more time and pick your top 3. Then, show the top 3 to a few other people and get their opinion before choosing a winner.
For your reference, here are some amazing subject lines that you should totally steal:
* Step 1 - Open this email.
* You NEED to check this out!
* [Exclusive Content] Open right now!
* Don't like your job? Fire your boss...
People open emails because of curiosity or self-interest. Be creative and make it happen.
3. Collect awesome emails in a swipe file.
This is by far the most important thing you could ever do. Remember, the best copywriters steal from other great writers. You should steal too. Sounds stupid right? Wrong....
Literally create a folder strictly for email swipes. Find outstanding emails you receive that have crazy good subject lines and great preheaders. Save them and use them too. This will be your number one resource to reference back to.
4. Avoid getting caught in spam.
Obviously, it’s practically impossible for people to open your email if it’s going into spam. Spam filters are intended to help people avoid inboxes filled with shoddy emails. But sometimes, email campaigns with the best intentions get caught.
Here’s a list of the things you need to do to avoid the plague called the "spam folder"
* Don’t use any cute tricks, trying to cover up the unsubscribe button.
* Include an address and from name in your email.
* Don't use images ever.
* Have great content/link ratio.
* And here’s the big one: Test everything.
Want to know if your email is going to go to spam? Simply send a test email to yourself and a few friends and ask them where it went. If it does go to spam, adjust what you think might have caused it and try again. There’s nothing better than knowing for sure.
5. Send your emails at the right time.
Email marketing all comes down to timing. I use GetResponse to manage my subscribers. They have a great feature called perfect timing, which allows me to send them emails when they are more likely to open them. The best time of day to email, depending on your audience, is generally the same for everyone. Think about when you look at your emails.
6. Get rid of inactive subscribers.
I know this one might hurt but it is a must. Subscribers that don't open your emails are "dead leads" no matter how you look at it. The last thing you need is your emails going to people that don't want to read them.
For Example: At the end of every month I delete everyone who hasn't opened me emails in the last 30 days. This is called list hygiene. By doing this, your list will be healthy and fresh. Remember it is always better to have a small healthy list than a huge beat up list.
7. Use less automation.
This is kind of a no brainer to be honest. Too much automation will bore your subscribers to death. One of the biggest mistake email marketers make is sending traffic to a landing page and then have a massive email autoresponder sequence set up.
This is what you call laziness. You have to create a relationship with your subscribers and not look at them as robots. Robots don't pull out credit cards and buy offers, people do.
8. Use a real person’s name in the “from” field.
I thought I’d finish with an easy one.
Instead of using your business name in the “from” field, use the name of an actual person. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s your customer support person. Whatever the case, use a real person’s name.
67% of subscribers open an email simply because of who the email is from.
Using a real person’s name creates the sense that you’re not a robot, but you’re a human being with wants, desires, and personality. Often times, it’s that personality that people connect with. And once they do, they’ll keep opening your emails simply because they like you.
Tell them who you are in the “from” field and they’re more likely to open your emails.
That's it guys, happy emailing!
