Giveaways VS Step By Step Guides For Lead Generation

One gets you more leads while the other makes you more money.

I was thinking of adding this to the title, but almost all my titles are a sentence long, so I decided to write some short ones…

why am I telling you this?

Because you should know everything you do online should have a clickable title, even Spock knows it.

ok, both giveaways and step by step guides work well, you can use either one to build your list, let me share my experience with them.

I have never liked giving away stuff, nor have I liked getting something for free… because free is useless, however a long time ago a famous marketer was swearing giveaways were the way to build a list and I said:

“what the heck, I’ll test it to see how it goes”

…and I started getting boat loads of leads… that suck LOL.

I started getting so many leads I was wondering what to do with them… ok, I’m exaggerating a bit, it wasn’t that much LOL, just wanted to stress enough the fact that I started getting three times more leads by offering free stuff.

Prior to that I had been offering a step by step guide to dominating Google, Facebook PPC and some more coolness you can get by subscribing to the blog.

I’m still offering the first three chapters of my book for free as you can see, though I know how to write emails that sell and am mainly after volume.

Turns out people love free stuff… I don’t get that, but it’s the target market that matters (made that sound good a? LOL) and not me.

But people who love free stuff… well, love free stuff LOL, and are almost impossible to be converted into customers unless you are me or have read my blog long enough to start selling like me.

On the other hand step by step guides are great because you get to show people you are awesome and willing to help them succeed (if your guide is great)… and it gets people to stay subscribed long enough to see that.

So, giveaways or step by step guides?

It depends on what you want to achieve mainly.

If you want to just get more leads to read your new blog posts then free stuff is the way to go and here’s how to offer it.

1 Create some kind of an ebook traffic guide

2 install a popup

and don’t tell me you believe it will alienate your visitors or whatever people who don’t know how to get leads say, it will not alienate anything, it will get you tons of leads and you will love me for advising you about it.

I use optinmonster as it is killer effective, quite cheap compared to the rest and I learned my lesson when I lost everything in 2011 – spend your money smart, I had spent so much money on useless stuff I don’t even feel like talking about it, which is one of the reasons I failed so bad… also, I love the name, they couldn’t have come up with anything better.

Anyway, optinmonster is the way to go, but you can use whatever you want, there are numerous tools to get the job done out there, just don’t use some free ugly popup as it is not going to work.

4 Set up the tool to open the popup a few seconds after the visitor arrives, or they will close it automatically.

If you want to make more money, you should offer a step by step guide, install the popup and make it a 10 day training, day one – PPC, day two – link building etc.

I personally think you should offer free stuff to get leads only if you are certain about your selling, since the more leads you get the more you have to pay for software and stuff… you don’t want 10,000 leads and one sale, when you can make it off of ten leads…

and yeah I know about the lifetime customer value or whatever it was called, but believe me, once you start paying thousands you will start thinking how to get rid of the crappy leads fast.
