What To Wear On Your First Day Of Work

Starting a new job can be such a life-changing event, that it’s easy to forget the simple things… such as what to wear on your first day of work. Obviously, being well-groomed, fragrant and hygienic is bottom-line. But the office Dress Code is an important aspect of every professional operation, whether it’s strictly white-collar or smart-casual. Here are three things that will help ensure that you get it right on that all important first day.

1. Do Your Research

THE first day at a new job can be a highly pressurised situation, as if all that preparation for the interview wasn’t stressful enough. But choosing what to wear on your first day of work is a big deal, and it’s worthwhile doing a little homework on the Dress code of the organisation where you’re embarking on the latest chapter of your career. Research into the dress code will put your mind at rest. You could even start this at the interview, by take a quick sharp-eyed look around for people working at their desks, for example.

If this isn’t possible, you could either ask, or failing that it will be easy enough to undertake some research online into the dress code either at the specific company, or other businesses in the same sector. This is putting your best foot forward, ensuring that you will fit in with the other members of the team, and demonstrating that you’ve cared sufficiently to find out about the dress code.

In the event of your drawing a blank on the research front, there are at least two classic office wear pointers that will never let you down when considering what to wear on your first day of work. The first is, go for a classic shirt and tie.

2. The Failsafe Shirt & Tie

THE shirt and tie is an ultra safe and traditional way to go. It will suit the dress codes of almost all workplaces. Depending on the formality of the job, a simple, plain shirt is recommended, but a slightly more casual workplace would give you the chance to wear a shirt of more informal design. Adding a suit jacket enhances the sense of professionalism emanating from this classic workplace dress choice.

3. Go Classic with Pants & Shoes

THE guidelines for pants and shoes will differ from workplace to workplace, but the most reliable choice is for a pair of suit trousers. Best colours to start with are dark, neutral tones, with a complementary hued shirt and jacket. For those with a slim leg, a smart option is slim-fit. If you feel that you don’t have the build to wear this cut, which is quite unforgiving, play it safe and stick with regular-cut trousers. Traditionally, black, suit shoes should be worn with black or the darkest pants, while brown shoes go nicely with navy pants.
