Santa’s making a list and he’s checking it TWICE!

To find out if you’ve been NAUGHTY or NICE!

So if you’ve been a total Workaholic this year – checking your email during weekends, feared taking vacations, or have been making excuses to pop into office when you should have been somewhere else, disappointing your loved ones, maybe your kids, spouse or friends, denying your need to exercise or just relax… you know which list you are likely to be on!

Okay now, when you are past that *guilty* feeling, read on. For we know how it is when you simply love working and the to-do lists only seem to grow longer.

Workaholism – a 21st Century Addiction. 7 Signs to Watch For!

With our lives becoming increasingly digital, work addiction has skyrocketed for it’s nearly impossible to disconnect from work and the worldly hype. U.S ranks as the 5th most workaholic country in the world with 4 in 10 Americans unwilling to use their paid vacation days, overall amounting to 169m days i.e. USD 52.4 billion in lost benefits. Researchers at the University of Bergen, Norwegia have created a 7-point scale to identify one’s workaholic quotient.

If you find yourself nodding your head and answering ‘often’ or ‘always’ to any of the points below, you are high on the radar. Do you:

  • Always look for ways to free up more time to work?
  • Often end up spending more time working than initially intended?
  • Use work as an outlet to escape guilt, anxiety, depression, and other negative feelings/events?
  • Often hear family and friends urging you to cut down on work and go slow?
  • Become stressed if for some reason, you are not connected to your work or worse, prohibited from it?
  • Regularly prioritize work over hobbies, leisure activities, exercise, and spending time with loved ones?
  • Continue to work despite failing health?

Vacation or Fakation? Pushing Your Inner Workaholic to Really Take a Break

There’s an easy way to tell if you are really taking a vacation or faking it – if your luggage has more space for chargers of all your electronic devices and of course the devices themselves, as compared to holiday gear, you know your work circuits are overcharged and pleasure circuits are, well, unused or rusted.

If the idea of a vacation sounds like losing control, something which is totally anathema to you – take these baby steps towards taking a proper vacation:

Make it a goal to stay unplugged: It’s obvious you are the type who dig goals and go after them with all your enthusiasm but when it comes to relaxing, the sheer feeling of ‘nothingness’ fills you with dread. The trick is to treat taking vacations/relaxing as a goal – organize sight-seeing visits, make restaurant reservations, make packing lists, etc.

Get help to deaddiction – Make a pact for accountability with family and friends who travel with you, and ask for their support in helping you unplug completely – even if for a short duration.

Hire an assistant: Wary of delegating? That’s the only way you will be able to stay on top of work AND enjoy a vacation. Train your virtual assistant to answer emails and calls on your behalf, pay bills and taxes, maintain your records, sales leads, etc.

While Santa sure knows if you’ve been naughty or nice, at Habiliss, our virtual assistants ensure you get the TIME to be NICE to yourself and those who matter. What’s more – you get a surprise discount on signing up for any of our packages during this Christmas season!
