India switching to electric vehicles soon

The TVS iQube (Image property of TVS)

TVS is set to debut their first Electric two-wheeler in India – the Iqube. There have been many start-ups and lesser known brands that took their shot at bringing about an affordable electric two-wheeler without much success. Though, electrification of India’s vehicle market is closer than anticipated, with the iQube already available for pre-orders online (for ₹5,000) for residents of Bengaluru. The scooters will start shipping January 27, priced at Rs. 1.15 lakhs. About 1000 units of the iQube will be produced every month.

This green scooter is quite in line with the “Make in India” movement, as the technology, software, and battery solutions are all made in India. TVS will provide 10 outdoor charging points on launch, and the scooter will be available through 10 dealerships in Bengaluru.

Specifications and Features

The iQube houses a 4.4kW motor capable of providing 75 kiometers of travel in a single full charge. It boasts of a 78kmph top speed, along with a host of cutting-edge features such as different riding modes (Power and Economy), parking assist (through the presence of a reverse gear), smartphone integration, Day and Night display and more.

The scooter will also be equipped with location based services such as live location tracking, location history and a log of past ride details. It can accelerate from 0 to 40 kmph in 4.2 seconds. Other features include regenerative braking, over speed alert, navigation assist, range indicator, incoming call/SMS alerts and geo-fencing. iQube will also ship with a home charging unit, that can charge the Li-ion battery enough for a day’s worth of riding (based on average commute distance), within 60 minutes. A full charge takes about 5 hours, with no fast charging support for now. Your purchase of the scooter comes with a 3 year warranty on the battery.

Some physical specifications include a ground clearance of 150 mm, 140 Nm of peak torque, telescopic front suspension and hydraulic twin tube shock absorbing rear suspension, alloy wheels and IP67 water and dust resistance.

The iQube features LED Headlamps and Taillights, a clean design aesthetic, all digital instrument console, silver-gray colored body with a black front and a blue backlit logo.

TVS also offers an iQube companion app for iOS and Android devices, providing useful features such as device and battery status, real time location tracking and smart statistics, that will enhance your experience of owning an iQube scooter.

TVS isn’t the first mainstream motor company to offer an electric scooter, with Bajaj recently releasing a re-imagined version of the classic Chetak scooter. Other offerings on the market include Ather 450 and Okinawa Praise.

You can book a test drive for the iQube through TVS’s website.
