UN Security Council will hold a security meeting due to the decision by North Korea to launch a long-range rocket.

The countries that requested for the meeting are Japan, South Korea and the US so as to collectively come up with a response to the launch.

Pyongyang’s reason for the launch is that it intended to put a satellite in orbit. However, some critics say that the launch was a way of testing a ballistic missile.

North Korea has on equal grounds violated the UN resolutions. A few weeks ago, the country launched its fourth nuclear test.

The North Korea media had a lot of kind words concerning the launch. They depicted the rocket’s movement in the sky to be a fascinating site.

A statement provided information that Kwangmyongsong-4, a new Earth observation satellite was placed into orbit, not more than ten minutes after the launch was made.

A state TV newsreader hailed the act and added that it was part a peaceful space programme in the country. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jon-un ordered the launching and there are plans to have more launches in the future.

The spy agency to South Korea told the MPs that the move by North Korea should be considered a ballistic missile. In the closed-door briefing, they said that the satellite put in place cannot be of any use.

In 2012, a different rocket was launched which was lighter than the one launched now. The weight of the current one is 200kg, which is lighter when compared to the normal weight for a satellite.

The MPs were also told that North Korea has the ability to support intercontinental ballistic missiles and has plans underway to carry out a fifth nuclear test.

According to BBC’s John Sudworth, the Sunday events do not affect the power balance of North East Asia. That is not the first instance in which the country has tried to place an object in space by utilizing a long-range rocket.

Nonetheless, it remains a very provocative occurrence and has thus attracted the attention of Tokyo, Seoul and Washington. Some have termed it “intolerable” and “unforgivable.”

The timing is also questionable. They have made the launching just a few weeks after they conducted a fourth nuclear test. The United Nations is gauging the sanctions response.

Beijing is not likely to accept the illusion that what brought about the launching was done to test the missile. North Korea is most likely to pay them to do so at half the price involved.

However, China has always been careful. It fears not to push a neighbor that is heavily sanctioned and is isolated as well.

The response from Ban Ki-moon is that the act is “deeply deplorable.” Nato on the other hand, said that the move directly violated the resolutions by the United Nations Security Council.

China’s position is that it “regrets” what North Korea did but pleads with the “relevant parties” not to act in a manner that would make the country fall into more economic hardships.
