Bihar schools opt for odd-even formula

CHHAPRA: Much before Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal implemented the odd-even scheme to reduce traffic and environmental pollution in the National capital region, the same idea has been used by the Bihar Education Department for rationing space in schools. A number of government schools in Bihar are run either in different shifts or on alternate days. Some of the schools even follow different timings for boys and girls, just because of the inadequate infrastructure.

Among such schools is the MD High School at Kanhouli on NH-101 near Baniapur in Saran. The institute had a total strength close to 3000, roughly comprising of equal number of boys and girls. Students of this school attend the classes only on alternate days based on gender i.e, if boys attend the school today, they have to rest tomorrow to facilitate classes for girls. In spite of the odd-even formula being implemented in schools, the management says that they still cover the entire syllabus during this period.

When contacted, District Education Officer of Saran Mr Awadhesh Bihari said, “Shortage of classrooms and more than 3000 students on rolls, is the main reason for the current situation. We are confident that the issue will be sorted out soon. The Education department has directed Head masters to submit proposals for the construction of additional classrooms, we expect the situation to improve in the coming days”.

Meanwhile, the odd-even formula may impact the students in one or the other way. For instance, poor uneducated parents may send their children to labor to earn some money as the school officially functions only three days a week, thereby increasing the child labor cases.
