Jose Mourihno – “If I was a defender, I would be very upset with the attacking players”

Jose Mourihno expressed his frustration towards Manchester United’s forwards, saying that his defenders have every right to be angry at the Attacking Players after the team’s poor performance.

After drawing 1 – 1 with RSC Anderlecht, many observers were quick to conclude that Manchester United’s reluctance to score may be doing them more harm than they thought. At first, it may have been a story of bad luck but it has stopped being so. Now the question has been shifted to scrutinizing the quality in front of goal.

United had taken an early lead in the first half courtesy of a Henrikh Mkhitaryan goal. That joy would soon be drained by Leander Dendoncker who found his way to the net as the game neared an end. Jose Mourihno once again walked out of the pitch with his 10th 1 – 1 draw this season. The Belgians now have an edge during the second leg of the Europa League to be held next Thursday.

In the 52 matches United have played this season, they have drawn 14 times.

“But if I was a Manchester United defender, I would be very upset with the attacking players because they have to kill the game and they didn’t,” said their coach.

Wasted Chances

Their performance is clearly not bad luck but rather wastefulness.

Paul Pogba and Mkhitaryan had open opportunities in the second half to kill of Anderlecht but lost them. This prompted a respond from Mourihno, who scathingly analyzed the United’s forward play.

He said that they had chances to score but failed to take them. “Sloppy is maybe the right word in my poor English. You have to play more seriously. If we put together the performances of two or three of our attacking players and you squeeze you get not much juice out of it,” he said.

He continued to explain that results would have turned out greatly and thus they are the only ones to blame.

The coach cited many areas where the problem lay including losing the ball easily and putting a halt on the counter attacks. That is all because of “sloppy touches, sloppy decisions” which in return allowed the opponents get counterattacks. “Our defenders were very much in the game and they resolved all these problems.”

Mourihno has in recent weeks called upon players such as Anthony Martial, Mkhitaryan, Marcus Rashford  and Jesse Lingard to be more proactive. It seems they are yet to hid to the call as the Portuguese was yet again left frustrated.

His only point of solace may be in the defense. “It was a strong performance by the team from a defensive point of view,” he said.
