Why is Amazon having it Rough in India?

Amazon’s presence in India may be hurt as a result of a series of missteps.

After having spent over $5 billion dollars in the much versatile India market, Amazon has in recent weeks been at loggerheads with Indians as a result of its newly invented products.

Two weeks ago, Amazon had to issue a quickly crafted apology after having Sold doormats bearing Indian flag. The company’s woes once again emerged after selling flip-flops possessing the image of iconic mahatma Gandhi.

In the two occasions, government officials were publicly vocal.

This increasing criticism towards the e-commerce giant is a huge setback as it attempts to fight against local rivals in the promising market, reports NDTV.

Miriam Burt, vice president of research for retail at Gartner said that it’s about time Amazon took lessons on Indian culture as well as behaviour.

She said that the growth of the e-commerce company in India has been exponential but that is equally accompanied with a set of grips.

But even as the company grapples with the two unfortunate events, a third controversy is already on the rise. Pictures of a skateboard bearing the Hindu god Ganesha began doing the rounds last week, sparking more outrage from Indians at home and abroad.

Most of the complainants explain that these skateboards are used on the feet. Having a picture of Lord Ganesha on them hurts the feelings of many.

Lawyers have already petitioned the government to take action against Amazon.

CEO Jeff Bezos has been asked by the Universal Society of Hinduism, located in Nevada, to apologize over the products, despite the locations they are being sold. Some cigarette cases and bedsheets sold in the US bear the images of Hindu deities.

As expected, Twitter users and product reviewers have not been left behind their criticism. One anonymous reviewer asked Amazon to either respect Indian gods or walk out of India.

“Amazon shame on you… If you can’t respect our god, you can’t even be in India,” read the review.

The Seattle-based retail giant is keen at having the matter settled as fast as possible. Its spokesperson said that the offending products had been removed and that Amazon lacked any further comments on the matter.

However, repeated misjudgment may continue to be catastrophic to the firm’s reputation in a market where it needs to excel.

Amazon is currently under tight scrutiny and has to ensure the incidences do not occur again.
