The New Food Challenge

Quick, what’s your favorite food?

Do you remember when you first tried it? Probably not. I’m guessing it’s been your favorite food for a long, long time.

I grew up a pretty picky eater. The cuisine in central Wisconsin consisted of cheese, bratwurst, cheese curds, frozen pizza, spaghetti, mashed potatoes, and cheese. Pretty adventurous, eh?

As a youngster I found myself in the proverbial pocket. I knew I liked chicken tenders and french fries. So, why try anything else when I went to restaurants? I may have only had one chance a month to dine-out. Why screw it up trying something new and adventurous?

It wasn’t until I moved to Arizona that I began to broaden my food horizons. I was introduced to a vast array of Mexican food and even started exploring other options a bigger city could offer.

A group of friends went to a Thai restaurants while I tagged along. I had not been exposed to much Asian cuisine living in the little b-f town of Wisconsin Rapids.

When I consulted my friends on what to order, they recommended the Pad Thai. I obliged.

Mind blown!

Now, pad thai is one of my favorite foods. I never would have discovered it if I hadn’t been at least a little adventurous. Sure, it would have been easy to check into a Applebee’s or Chili’s and stick to the same safe fare. Horizons need to be expanded if you truly want to test your limits.

My Challenge for you today is to try a new food. It doesn’t have to be a three course meal at a fancy restaurant you’ve never tried. “I’ll have the foie gras, please.” No, it can be something as simple as a new fruit or vegetable or something simple you find packaged at the Asian grocer.
