On the inaugural day of Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference WWDC 2016, Apple showed off a host of new and refreshed software. Quite a few things changes, but the biggest announcement is of Apple iOS 10, the next major version of its mobile operating system.
The software update is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models capable of running iOS 9. The exceptions include iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and 3, original iPad mini, and the fifth-generation iPod touch.
Here is a first look at iOS 10:
The new version of iOS won’t be publicly available until later this year. It brings huge improvements to Siri, iMessage, iOS apps, Watch OS, Apple TV OS, and Apple Pay. It highlights broader themes of better integration between a slew of Apple devices, platforms, and 3rd party apps, along with redesigns of Apple’s own software including Photos, News, Maps and Music.
Apple iOS 10 offers lockscreen widget along with improved notifications and new functionalities, many of which have appeared on Android first. The only functionality worth noting is 3D Touch action, which lets you shoot a message reply straight from the lock screen. iOS will let you uninstall stock apps that you never use – again, a feature which first appeared on Android. The new version of iOS also features read receipts, again, not a very innovative concept. The feature is available on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messengers, et al. Similarly, the person-to-person feature first appeared on WhatsApp some time ago.
If you look at it, Apple hasn’t really innovated with the latest version of its mobile operating system. The only exception being – Scribble, to hand-write a message; and Handwriting, a handwriting recognition functionality.
Neat, Apple!
Although, Apple officials went into detail about how the latest iOS works and the technology inside of it, they didn’t directly address the lack of innovation. Sure, everybody thinks Apple iOS 10 is great and all with improved functionality and ease of use, but wouldn’t Steve Jobs be turning over his grave to see his company emulating Google Android?
In Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs famously said: "I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."
Few are familiar with the story of what actually made Steve Jobs so angry. Very few are familiar with the Google-Apple tryst that explains the betrayal Jobs felt about Google’s first’s ever Android launch.
For Steve Jobs, Apple never had to resort to emulating features that already exist in competitor OS to stay ahead of competition. For him, it was primarily about innovation. But unfortunately, Steve Jobs' Apple is turning exactly into the kind of technology company the creative genius would have hated and the new iOS is the perfect example of the disaster post-Jobs reign.
To quote Steve Jobs: “When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.”
