The inner workings of the GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T

In the EV segment, pickup trucks are the next big market to capture, as Tesla and Ford are also racing to build their own. The Ford restructuring plan is focused on accelerating its electric plans. The GMC Hummer’s most expensive variant has been launched first with the more affordable variants planned for 2023 and 2024 respectively. The Rivian R1T will be offered with a quad-motor setup while models with two different battery sizes are expected to go into production next year.

The GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T are both electric and go from zero to 60 in around three seconds.

Both vehicles have height-adjustable air suspension that make it possible to lower drag and raise up off-road to provide better ground clearance and enhance angles of approach. Both the Hummer EV and the Rivian R1T have well armored batteries that are securely placed, to prevent any form of damage.

From hands free driving to top-notch sensors, driving technologies have undergone a sea change. Major trends show that cars of the future will be electric, connected, and sleek. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV

The Hummer EV features off-road technology to make your driving experience smoother.

The four-wheel steering system shrinks the turning circle of the GMC Hummer and allows it to Crab-Walk that is side-step obstacles by moving sideways instead of going around it.

The electric Hummer also has Super Cruise technology that works with FGMC Connected Services to monitor real-time data using sensors, cameras, GPS and LiDAR map data to detect curves and terrain changes to make long drives breezy and comfortable. It also provides driver-assist technologies for hands-free driving and automatic lane change. The Hummer EV has some traction problems but provides superior crawling.

The 2022 Rivian R1T

The Rivian R1T is equipped with eight modes “four for the road and four for when it ends”.

The driver can adjust height, pedal response, all-wheel drive and more to optimize comfort and efficiency. The driving modes of the R1T allows riders to set the tone, as All Purpose mode mostly adapts to driving situations automatically, while Sport can provide exceptional cornering performance and reduce body lean in turns.

Off-Road Auto as the name suggests is for your sojourns on trails and dirt-roads with the 2022 Rivian pickup while Off-Road Drift uses torque vectoring to equally distribute power to all four wheels for expert drivers, and Off-Road Rally lets you speed up on off-road trails of gravel roads. The Conserve mode is to optimize range for longer trips and the Tow mode keeps things springy with maximum torque for an all-wheel drive.

Accessories and Exterior

The 2022 Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV have clear differences when it comes to wheels and how they perform on different terrains. The Hummer carries 35-inch wheels while the Rivian R1T pickup is packed with 34-inch all-terrain ones. The GMC is able to achieve a ground clearance of 15.9 in comparison to Rivian’s 14.9 inches. But the Rivian makes up for it with its four motor 4WD while the Hummer only has three.

The eight modes of driving also allow the R1T to better the crawling experience when compared to the Hummer EV that can ford around 32-inches of water while the former can tackle 42.9 inches.

The R1T’s driving modes give it a considerable advantage over the Hummer but the latter is able to climb steep inclines much more easily. The Hummer’s camera setup totals 18 while the Rivian’s does not match up. However, the Rivian does not need as many cameras as it provides decent visibility while the Hummer’s high hood sometimes obstructs the view as it draws close to obstacles.

The Rivian has a smaller bed but makes up with great storage while the Hummer EV boasts of additional bed length.

The 2022 Rivian R1T weighs around 7,000 pounds while the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is almost 2,000 pounds heavier than the Rivian pickup truck. Both vehicles make for a great off-roading experience but require careful maneuvering.

Conclusion

When you put the GMC Hummer EV Pickup vs 2022 Rivian R1T, the Hummer is extremely stylish but the Rivian with all eight modes has a broader scope of uses. The driving tech in the Hummer makes it an enviable asset and if that style suits you, off-roading can be a great recreational activity.

Currently, the Hummer EV Pickup is only available in the Edition 1 form. The GMC Hummer EV price starts at $110,295. The 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition has been sold out and has been replaced with the R1T Adventure. The Rivian R1T price for the Adventure starts at $74,050 but for the 2023 R1T Adventure it can go even higher.

The two trucks represent very different styles as the Rivian is more suited for an everyday experience while the Hummer is well-equipped to support your adrenaline rush.
