In recent years, the world has made headway towards clean Energy. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy is now the cheapest source of energy generation – even without subsidies. The report notes that the cost of installation and maintenance of renewable energy is on a downward trajectory. IKEA, the world’s biggest furniture brand, is on a mission to bank on the rapid cost reductions in recent years. The IKEA clean energy subscription service will now power the home market in Sweden starting September.

IKEA’s clean energy subscription service will make it easier for private homes to use renewable energy. The subscription service called Stromma that will allow customers to buy renewable electricity from solar and wind parks to power their homes.

The service will only be available in Sweden, although the blog post announcing the service mentions that Sweden is one of the first countries to get IKEA’s renewable subscription service. According to Ingka Group, the owner of 367 IKEA stores of the 422, said the latest move by IKEA cites an “ambition to enable customers in all our Ingka Group markets to use and generate more renewable energy through our energy services by 2025.”
IKEA’s partner Skea Solar will buy power from the Nordic power exchange and sell it to IKEA consumers without surcharge. Customers of the Stromma service can expect a fixed monthly subscription fee in addition to a variable rate. IKEA is yet to announce what the charges will be.

Customers in Sweden will be able to track their power usage via a mobile app. The same app can additionally be used by those who had purchased IKEA’s solar panels. Those panels will be able to sell excess energy back to the furniture maker. As of now, the Stromma service is only available in Sweden, however, plans are underway to expand in other markets. IKEA sells solar panels in 11 markets.
In the past, IKEA has been one of the few companies heralding the green revolution. It stopped the sale of non-LED lights and soon plans to drop non-rechargeable alkaline batteries from it online and offline stores. The furniture giant is also planning to turn a Swedish city into a sustainable community.
There is no doubt that the latest move to offer clean energy subscription service will help earn kudos from conservationists. IKEA can address environmental concerns such as the furniture chain’s impact by serving as a renewable energy source.
