The importance of message repetition and modification of delivery

I’m going to start off by saying that I’m terrible. I haven’t been on this site in 3-1/2 years but a number of you are connected to me in other ways and know that I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. Life has gotten in the way and I’m going to leave that right there.

I had a doctor’s appointment today because I’m of that age (over 50) where you have to see certain doctors every six months for the mere exercise of being told that you’re still healthy. As much of a pain it is, I’ll take it because I could be dealing with the alternative.

The doctor in question is one that I’ve been seeing for a number of years and I simply went on autopilot in terms of traveling to her office. As I was heading to the office, I noticed another person’s name on the door and a different specialty so it made me wonder if I was on the wrong block. I checked Google Maps and noticed a different address in the listing so I stepped to the new location.

When I arrived to the office, I asked the front desk when did they move to the new location and I was told July (my last visit was March or April, I guess…taking that six month business into consideration). In addition, I was told that they sent out a text message announcing the move…I guess I missed that. Another staff member mentioned that an email announcement went out as well…I guess I missed that as well.

Granted, they “did their job” by informing folks via text and email about their move but let’s face it, how many text messages and emails do we receive during the course of the day? The staff mentioned that a number of patients were unaware of their move so that means that their messaging delivery was ineffective.

What would’ve worked for me and a lot of other patients? Sending out a postcard. Sure, it would cost more due to printing and postage costs but it would be more effective in terms of a call to action (and I’m sure would save the staff from answering the “where are you” calls). If I received a card in the mail, that would’ve prompted me to update the address book in my phone. End of story. Fortunately, they had the foresight to update their Google Maps Listing.

Who didn’t update their Google Maps listing? Jordyn’s pediatrician. We only go once per year and I guess I missed that memo. We had a well visit scheduled and I programmed my navigation to go to the place. When we arrived, I was thrilled to see that there weren’t any cars in the Parking Lot but when I got to the front door, I saw a sign stating that they moved (hence, the lack of cars in the parking lot). What made it confusing is that they still had their signage in place at the old location. The new location is a mile down the road…no harm, no foul.
