We’re working from home & the kids are learning at home.

Yesterday, I commented on my friend’s Facebook feed that when we were growing up in NYC in the 80s, we couldn’t have imagined the concepts of working from home or having to do any type of Learning at home, besides homework or independent research. If we had a snow day, we spent the day watching “I Love Lucy,” “The Price is Right,” or catching up on the soaps (I was partial to “All My Children”) because we didn’t have cable and since we weren’t contributing to the bills, anything that was recorded on VHS wasn’t for us.

Last Thursday, I wrote about the changes that have taken place over the last 20 years in terms of working from home. Some of us received a “work from home” order last week and it’s been expanded to include more “non-essential staff.” To make things more interesting, schools are closed for a number of weeks thereby resulting in a “learn from home” initiative.

A number of us have mastered systems to set ourselves up mentally to work from home…dedicated space, stretch breaks, set Schedule, etc. and I felt the need have a sit-down with my daughter in terms of what’s going down in the coming weeks while she’s home from school.

First and foremost…this isn’t a license to hang out watching YouTube in her pajamas all day. Nope, not gonna happen under my watch.

I told Jordyn that to get ready for her day and get her mindset prepared for “in home learning,” she needs to start her day by taking a shower, getting dressed (fortunately, not in her school uniform) and having breakfast before she tackles her set lessons.

I also have my way of organizing and guess who will benefit from this…take a wild guess.

Since I am a big fan of set schedules, somebody is going to learn that maintaining a “school schedule mindset” will be happening under my watch. Sure…there are set deliverables for a given day but if work that’s slated for a 6 hour day is completed in let’s say 4, guess what, something educational needs to fill up those 2 hours. Trust me, I have apps and websites bookmarked and installed on multiple devices.

Cabin fever will definitely be an issue. Personally, I like take a walk in the morning but an afternoon walk will definitely be in order for the afternoon. I need to get my steps in somehow. Jordyn will definitely need fresh air and in the cases in inclimate weather, I’m sure there are videos on YouTube to help us burn some energy.

If there is anything positive that comes from Jordyn’s “learn from home” stint, she will have to opportunity to learn about alternative delivery methods to learning.
