Who are your Long-Term Planners ? - Is a statement that remains to be tested that the effectiveness of the Planning process in directly related to the quality and quantity of work done by managers who make plans. As in the thinking strategic planning used to be considered as upper-level management responsibilities only.
Now assuming it is not true anymore. Almost every manager in the Organization must be look far ahead beyond the present if organizations are to remain competitive. Although the future of the organization as a whole is directed by the senior management team, managers in throughout the organization will play an important role in determining the position future that will be achieved.
Moreover, these managers will be the main implementer, which will bring a chill to the future become a reality. The focus of my discussion in this chapter are the various roles which must be played by managers at all levels in the process planning, with special emphasis on senior management, and when and how to involve others in the process.
There will be overlap between the contents of this chapter with the relevant chapters in the handbook of thinking Guidelines for strategic and tactical thinking. If you are already familiar with the approach suggested in the book, you can just skim this chapter, and focus on the parts that are directly related to the long-term planning.
