Your Boss is Getting More Sleep Than You

Tags: sleep senior

According to a survey conducted by Expert Reviews, professionals in senior roles at work get more sleep than their junior counterparts. The study highlights that chairpersons, CEOs, and directors consistently report getting a higher amount of sleep compared to both managers and non-managers.

  • The more senior your role at work, the more sleep you get until you become an owner. 77% of CEOs agree that they get enough sleep, compared to 60% of owners and only 38% of individuals without managerial duties.
  • 45% of people get less than the recommended 7 hours of sleep per night.
  • CEOs nap 39% more than managers, 24% more than directors and 36% more than those with no managerial responsibilities.

The NHS says that adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. 45% of people living in Britain fail to meet these requirements and sleep for less than 7 hours, our findings show. Well-rested individuals have a higher cognitive function making it easier to perform well throughout the day.

Sleep patterns differ across professional roles; our survey findings indicate that individuals with more senior positions at work achieve more sleep. Out of all senior roles, owners get the least sleep with only 60% of them getting 7 or more hours. This is still more than managers and non-manages get.

70% of CEOs and 77% of chairpersons sleep for 7 or more hours each night. In comparison, 57% of managers meet or exceed the recommended amount, while 51% non-management employees also manage to secure 7 or more hours of sleep. This trend could be due to a number of factors including, sleep prioritisation, stress, tiredness or better routines for senior roles.

The more senior you are at work the more sleep you get, until you are a business owner. The survey also asked whether people think they get enough sleep. Only 45% of owners agree that they get enough sleep, compared to 100% of chairpersons and 77% of CEOs. Owners share more similarities with lower level employees rather than their senior counterparts when it comes to the extent to which they believe they get enough sleep.

A 2023 study by UCL suggests that naps can improve mental performance. As well as getting more sleep at night, those with more seniority tend to nap more, apart from owners.

In our survey, 71% of women and 68% of all respondents said the quality of their mattress impacts on the quality of their sleep. Only 17% disagreed.

Your bed can make or break your sleep. Mattresses that lack comfort, space and support will leave you tired and achy. To avoid this, the National Bed Federation recommends replacing your mattress every seven to eight years.
