How to manage your time with Intention

Guest post by Life Coach Sara Wisiniewski

Time. We all have the same 24 hours in the day.

So how come some people seem to manage to squeeze loads more into their days than others?

As someone who supports parents and entrepreneurs a lack of time is the most common complaint I hear. How can I be present as a mum and still operate at my best in my business?

I certainly remember the feeling of not being fully present as a Mum or as a boss when I was an employee. When I first started my business, I also put unrealistic pressures on myself and ended up feeling like I was failing at more than I was thriving at.

Here are my top 5 tips on squeezing as much out of your precious hours as you can and really using your time with intention;

1 – Set Goals, a result or someway of knowing you’ve nailed your week

At the beginning of the week define what the measure of a successful week will look like. Make these personal and business related and decide on how you will reward yourself for achieving them.

You need to include all your Essential activities here too, like family Stuff, non negotiables as well as the fun stuff. Being clear with yourself and those you share your life with about what you’re intending to spend your time doing this coming week is a powerful start point.

2 – Time Block

Have clearly defined times for the essential tasks and the stuff which will make sure you achieve what you’ve listed in number 1. Physically write it on your calendar/block it out and label it in your calendar.

Make them manageable chunks of time that you know you can concentrate on just one activity for. If you set a timer but leave your phone out of the room, you’ll surprise yourself with how much you can get done in even 30 minutes.

Seeing the blocks of time planned in for the Essential Activities also makes sure we can be more present in whatever we are doing at that time.

For example, you can have fun doing something with your kids in a more relaxed way if you know that you have planned for the admin you need to catch up on later that day.

3 – Be Realistic and Delegate

Back to making that initial list in step 1, are all the things on your list essential and have you created more hours of ‘stuff’ than there are in the week?!

Do you even know how long things take you so you can allow for them.

Have you had a discussion with yourself around what is really a priority and if it is, can you delegate or enlist help in any way to get it done?

4 – Play to Your Strengths

Are you a morning or an evening person?

Do you find your energy dips in the afternoon or do you take a while to get going on a morning?

Knowing how to use your time to the best advantage is a really bonus.

If you know you have lower energy in the evening, then plan your downtime for then, or something that won’t require huge concentration.

Whereas the stuff you need to be really firing for, put in for your best times.

5 – Take into account the Seasons

We are creatures of routine, but we have long become misaligned with the rhythms that we exist in within any 24-hour period.

We have natural ebbs and flows to our energy and moods across the month and across the year – start listening to that and work with it, not against!!

You’ll have heard people say that their energies are lower in the winter months when there is less daylight, but what about as the sun sets and rises, or the moon?

Trying to push and create when we should be resting or vice versa can just create frustration, so take some time to find your rhythm, rather than just confirming to the norm!

Above all else – use your time with intention and watch your achievements start to rocket!
