Facebook removing its 'Trending' feature after two years following controversies

Facebook serves as one of the biggest platform for discussing and discovering different news, events, topics and happenings throughout the world. But just from 'News Feed' only, it is impossible to remain updated on every current news and happenings of all over the world. To resolve this problem back in 2014, Facebook introduced its 'Trending' feature for its massive number of users in five countries. The 'Trending' feature of Facebook highlights interesting, popular and relevant topics discussed on Facebook and thus help to discover such topics and discussions which otherwise may not appear in their 'News Feed'. It appears in the form of a list showing every such topics that have recently become popular in Facebook. To fully ensure that the 'Trending' topics reflect real world events, the Facebook team thoroughly reviews every topic before they appear in the 'Trending' feed. Topics qualified to appear in 'Trending' feed are mainly determined by some important factors like level of engagement of those articles and the total number of publishers that are posting articles on Facebook about that particular subject. The 'Trending' feature shows five categories namely Top Trends, Politics, Science and Technology, Sports and Entertainment and all the Trending subjects come under anyone of these categories. Thus the 'Trending' feature is very useful to get instant updates on different interesting news, events and happenings all around the world.

But the social giant has announced in an official blog post that it will remove the 'Trending' feature completely from Facebook in next week. The head of news products at Facebook, Alex Hardiman, reported that the feature has become less and less useful to users with time due to recent changes in the way of consuming news on Facebook by users. He also reported that being active only in five countries, the 'Trending' feature now account for less than 1.5% of clicks to news publishers on an average. Moreover it has become a cause of headache for the company as sometimes controversial links and false headlines make their way into the 'Trending' list caused by false sharing and engagements. Though Facebook has always denied the fact of acting as media company and thus influencing content, yet it was alleged of suppressing links to popular conservative articles in the 'Trending' feed. Facebook is gradually checking on it and plans to replace human moderator with algorithms and artificial intelligence. It is also exploring new ways to keep its huge user base informed about different breaking news and happenings at different point of time, provided the news are from quality and reliable sources. Now publishers will be able to introduce the "breaking news" indicator feature on their 'News Feed' post which is currently being tested by the company. Thus from next week onward Facebook users all over the world are going to have a new experience of receiving trending news and happenings with an end to the two years of 'Trending' feature. A pop-up message is already appearing below the 'Trending' list notifying about its removal soon.
