Sydney’s Best Bakeries/Patisserie For All you Sweet Tooth Fanatics!

It’s no secret that we love our baked goods, desserts, and everything that are sweet and yummy. A bakery/patisserie is the first food place Ida would research and find no matter where we go. It is just so exciting to enter a bakery, someplace somewhere, smelling the delicious baked goods, looking at the bread, pastries, cakes, tarts and everything else on display.  It is a wonderful experience on its own.

That said, we were recently in Sydney and as always, we visited several bakeries and ate plenty of artisanal goods. With plenty of great bakeries in Sydney, it is hard to pick the absolute best. There are so many eateries with great offerings, each one is fancier than the other.  You experience more if you are willing to drive around Sydney to get to these bakeries.

However, with other travellers in mind, we have picked the ones which are impressive, yet easy to get to (for tourists). Especially if you rely on public transportation. Don’t worry, while these are somehow easy to find, they are not necessarily touristy and are deemed favourites amongst Sydney local as well.

Petal Met Sugar

This cute patisserie is also a florist. If you love beautiful flowers and great looking desserts, this place is a must. If you like to try a bit of everything, go for their mini-dessert plate. They are cute, yummy, tiny and oh so instagrammable. Also, try their selections of Japanese tea. They are pretty good.

Saga

If you have come across Andy Bowdy’s Instagram with his awesome creations, but bummed out because he is only available online, fret not. He now has a shop! Saga at Enmore showcase some of Andy’s best work. Stunning cakes and desserts in a cool setting, shared tables and very interesting table service menus.

We also have to mention that, Saga earned extra brownie points since they had on off- the -hook awesome hip-hop tracks the whole time we were there. Back to the cakes, they are super yummy and the servings are huge, you will need to share. We tried the Strawberry Mousse Cake and the Banana Cream Pie and came out of there full, high on sugar and happy.

Flour & Stone

Flour & Stone is just around the corner from the Woolloomoloo Wharf. It has such a great rustic charm that extends to their baked goods. They are well known for Lamingtons, which ran out by the time we got there. Instead, we had their canelé and the Raspberry sablé tart and was not disappointed.

The star was, however, their Fine Apple Tart. Perfectly caramelised apples on a thin crispy pastry, it is different than any other apple tart we have before and we loved it. Fine apple tart and a cup of hot choc? what a way to start your mornings!

Black Star Pastry

Black Star’s watermelon cake needs no introduction. Deemed as the most photographed cake in Australia, the cake is highly sought after and extremely popular.  But we didn’t go there for the Watermelon Cake. We have tried it before and to be honest, it is not our cup of tea.  Undeterred, we decided to pay the Newtown store a visit to see if there is more than meets the eye with this place.

We tried the Chicken Pie and Kouign-Anman and was pleasantly surprised. However, the one item that will truly make us a return customer is their Dragon Cake. A luxurious combination of dragon fruit, pomegranate, sponge and light pineapple cream. It is hands down one of the best cake we tried on this trip (and we tried heaps!).

To those who cannot make it to the original Newtown store, there have stores in Moore Park, Roseberry and CBD

The Grounds of Alexandria

Putting aside everything else you have heard about this place, which we can discuss later. Let’s talk about their sweet goodies. Plenty on offer here, from pastries to bread to cakes. They are not just great to look at, they are also yummy. So many choices here to try, good luck to those who have trouble deciding!

Bourke Street Bakery

There is a personal sentiment that goes with this bakery. Ida learned how to bake from their books. Their first cook book remained as Ida’s favourite cook book of all time. We ate here twice during our short stay here, which says something about this place.

The cake display may not be as fancy as the other stores and it reminds of one of those old-school Italian bakeries. A word of advice, when you enter the store, see what ever that is left, just get it.  Because we can assure you that they will taste out of this world.

We had the beef brisket pie, chicken & sweet potato pie, lamb almond and harissa sausage rolls, lemon tart, ginger creme brulee…gosh, you cannot pick a fault with this place. Do you want to know what honest food taste like? come here

To top it off, the service is great too. For this, other bakeries may come and go, but Bourke Street Bakery still stands and remains as a firm favourite of Sydneysider, and us.

To those who cannot make it to the original Surry Hills store, they also have branches in Newtown and Marrickville.
