How to connect with buyers at trade fairs

Are you looking for new buyers? Trade Fairs are none other than the best place to meet them. Trade Fairs can help you to learn about new markets and potential customers. People from all around the world tend to show up to these events.

If you have a product and want to increase your market share in different regions then going to an event will help. You can look for different ways to get involved in a trade fair. You will have the opportunity to meet new prospective buyers. You can add trade fairs as part of your arsenal in growing your business. This will be a good tactic in getting Business Cards from industry professionals. Here are some important tips for you to consider in developing new relationships at a trade fair.

Find the right event

Sounds simple, right? I once made the mistake of going to a local chamber event to sell enterprise IT solutions. What a big mistake that was for me. The local chamber is about small businesses owners meeting their community. This is a great event if you own a small coffee shop. This was not an event to sell large IT solutions. This experience helped me better understand that I needed to know the right events to sell my product. So, finding the right event is the foundation for meeting your prospective client. There are a lot of resources which are available for finding the right industry event.
  • The first place that I would start with would be doing a Google search. Start searching for industry associations to see if they host any events.
  • You should also look at industry trade publications to learn about trade fairs.
  • Chat with your peers to learn about events that they attend.
  • Find out about what events your competitors sponsor and attend.

Identify your prospects

Who is your ideal customer? This is a question which demands an answer. I have worked with companies that did not know who their customer was. If you can not identify the people who want your product or service then you have a problem. I find that a good tool to use is the buyer persona. This is a document which instructs you in identifying your customer. This includes demographic information, job profile, and their desires for a solution.

Be outgoing at the event

When I first started going to events, I ended up hanging out by myself. This was a real bummer because I did not know how to connect with other people who I did not know. I remembered that I would have hundreds of business cards printed out but they all remained in my pocket. It was not until I became a seasoned professional that I understood how to be successful.

You need to go in with the mindset that you are going to meet new people. The people that you are going to meet at these event are nervous too.

  • I found it easier to go with a colleague or buddy to these events.
  • You want to be out going and friendly when meeting people.
  • You do not want to cut off anyone in conversation that is not your ideal prospect.
  • Remember to respect everyone’s time and feelings. The people that you meet may know someone who may need your product.
  • You do not want to drink to much alcohol that your speech is slurred. You may just want to have one drink to take the edge off

Have fun. Enjoy your self at the trade show.
