Have you ever been lost in a city while exploring its skirts and alleyways? I’m assuming most of us had. It can difficult to navigate a complex place. What more for visually impaired people? That’s one of the reasons why Wewalk is created.

WeWALK is a smart Crane for the blind. It’s a breakthrough technology that uses Google Maps for navigation, and ultrasonic sensors to warn users of nearby obstacles, sending vibrations to the handle.

The engineers from Young Guru Academy (YGA) in Turkey developed the ground-breaking smart crane. One of the co-founders and CEO of WeWALK is Kursat Ceylan, who is also blind.

“In these days we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick,” he told CNN.

According to Ceylan, he helped build the cane as he wants to use modern technology in creating a navigation tool for the visually impaired.

“As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station, I don’t know which is my exit…I don’t know which bus is approaching…[or] which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWALK,” he added.

 WeWALK can be paired with a smartphone app via Bluetooth. The crane has touchpads, allowing the user to control their smartphone without holding it in their hand.

The smart crane has built-in speakers that are integrated with Voice Assistant and Google Maps software. This feature allows WeWALK to inform the user of nearby stores and other building details that the person can’t see.

The smart crane is now available for $500. The Turkish startup continues to develop WeWALK. The engineers are working towards their goal to pair the technology with ridesharing apps and transportation services.
