Quill.com sells over 1 million products as compared to less than 550,000 items offered on OfficeDepot.com.  The reduced number of product selection is negative because often the exact items that are made for specific office uses may not be on the Office Depot site. Both sides carry all the standard sizes and brands of ink, paper, toner, and pens. It is the specialty items that businesses need most that often are missing from small selection sites.

Prices

Both office supply retailers have competitive prices in the major categories. However, usually, Quill is the ultimate lower prices because of frequent sales, discount coupon codes, Quill rewards program and free gifts.

Site User Experience

I find Quill.com a better user experience because it is cleaner and more simple design.  My favorite feature is the large search bar at the top of every page makes it easy to type in my need and be taken directly to the exact item. It is faster to shop on Quill.com because of this great search engine so I can buy the office supplies I need more quickly.

If you prefer to browse the site instead of searching the drop-down menu has a good selection of sub-categories to make your shopping easier and more pleasurable. See the screenshot below of the Office Supplies category which has 36 subcategories including, Bags & Briefcases, Binders, Calculators, Calendars & Planners, Clipboards, Clips, Erasers, Desk Accessories, Easel Pads, Envelopes, Folders and Filing, Forms, Labels, Notepads, Post-it Notes, Rubberbands, Scissors, Stamps, Staplers, Storage and Organization, Tape and Writing Instruments.

Comparing the site to Office Depot which in the Office Supply category has only 11 subcategories, when Quill has 36. This necessitates more clicks to find the office items I need.

Also, I really dislike all the clutter on the page it is hard for my eyes to focus so it takes me longer to place my office supply order.

Then Office Depot’s site continues to confuse. When I click on the subcategory Filing and Folders, I want files and folders. But I am not taken to the filing department, oh no I am taken to another subpage containing tons of clutter about other items such as Pens, pencils and shipping supplies! Yikes, I clicked on Filing I want to buy files!

At Quill.com when I click on the subcategory Folders & Filing I am immediately taken to a page with 3,897 folders and files. Thank you

When I am on the files and folder subpage  I am offered a ton, over 12,  filter options that are specific to the product I am searching. This is really a big help. On the Files and Folders, such options to filter product results are File Folder Type, Size, Material, Color, Pack Qty, Product Ratings, Number of Tabs, Number of Fasteners, Tab Cut, Fastener Position and Color Family.

By using all these filters I can find the exact file folder ( I buy the red, right corner, single tab ones) I want in the shortest amount of time possible. Because I don’t really like buying office supplies. Don’t get me wrong I love to shop, but prefer shoe shopping at Lord and Taylors instead.

Reliable Corporation and Office Depot Merger

Quill is owned by Staples and runs its commercial division.  Reliable Office Supplies is now a part of Office Depot Office Max.  Now that Reliable has joined Office Depot it is providing an expanded selection of office supplies.  Reliable in business for almost a hundred years selling to small businesses, large companies and agencies.
