[Video] Flip It! How Successful People Start Their Day

When I first started researching the habits of Successful people, one of the biggest things that jumped out at me was how different they all were. And this was especially true with how they began their day.

Some swore by exercising. Some by meditation. Some spent an hour reading a variety of newspapers. Some avoided the news like a plague.

There was really no rhyme or reason to how successful people started their day.

Except … if you looked deeper, there actually WAS a common thread. And that thread is, they tended to start with self-care.

In other words, they took care of themselves first.

Even the ones who began their day by reading newspapers, they did it because it was their way of keeping their minds sharp and focused.

But, starting with self-care wasn’t the only thing they had in common. Successful people also share a common thread around what they DON’T do the moment they get out of bed.

Which is? Getting stuck in other people’s priorities.

I talk about this in my Flip It! video “Stop checking email first thing in the morning” but I think it’s worth talking about from another angle.

Because the truth is this: Successful people begin their day with some sort of self-care.

It could be meditation. It could be prayer. It could be journaling. It could be reading. It could be exercising. It could be jumping into their artistic or creative pursuits. It could be a combination of activities.

What they DON’T do is jump into email or phone calls or something else that puts other people’s priorities above their own.

And, BECAUSE they’re starting their day with self-care, that’s one of the reasons why they’re successful. It’s not selfish to begin your day taking care of you–it’s smart.

Now let’s talk about you. How are you starting your day? If you’re not starting your day with some form of self-care, then I’d love to invite you to change that.

One good place to start is by creating a Morning Practice.

It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, but what it does have to do is fill you up.

If you’ve never done a morning practice before, I’d like to invite you to try a few things and see what fits. Meditation, journaling, prayer, reading, exercise or even just sitting quietly for a few minutes with your coffee are all great activities for a morning practice.

Try them, even if it’s only for five or ten minutes, and see how that shifts your day. The results may even amaze you.
