Cunning drivers dodge speed traps and Ulez.

Drivers are turning to cunning to dodge speed traps and the unpopular Ulez charges in London.

Mayor Sadiq Khan believes that charging motorists £12.50-a-day for driving in low emission zones in London will not only deter drivers, but also finance solutions to ease pollution.

Doctoring plates.

Drivers are rebelling. A new police investigation suggests drivers are doctoring their number plates to get around it, the Daily Telegraph reported.

According to the investigation, up to one in 15  – around two million drivers – could be doctoring their plates. Sixty percent of Londoners use their cars for work.

Apparently, control is so lax on the sale of Fake Number Plates that this figure is expected to increase following the expansion of automatic number plate recognition – ANPR.

As little as £10.

Police will deploy this ANPR system to monitor new 20 mph zones as well as the Ulez  zone.

Drivers are turning to fake number plates.

They can be bought for as little as £10 from any one of the estimated 40,000 largely unregulated sellers.

You can also buy reflective tape that makes your number plate unreadable by the ANPR infrared cameras. This can be bought online for as little as £80.

“Exposing people to criminality.”

“It’s not rocket science. A lot of people will think they don’t want to embark on criminal damage of Ulez cameras, but will be tempted to doctor their number plate to save £12 a day,” Tony Porter, the former assistant contable with Greater Manchester Police told the Telegraph.

“The lack of regulation of the market for plates means we are exposing people to criminality.”

There are calls for a certification system for the licensing plate business and increased fines for those found guilty of cloning plates.
