Do what you love or love what you do!

“Do what you love” means having a profession or business in the area one actually like to be. Whether he is getting paid for it or not doing it for money but he feels more connected to the core of his heart with profession or business in this scenario. This connection is established if we do something we dream about or passionate about. There is nothing better than this! In the other scenario if we don’t get the opportunity to work in the area of our interest due to unfavorable circumstances only then we should learn to love what we are doing. This is the interim solution to keep ourselves motivated in short term however in the long term we should definitely search for a job or business in the area of our interest. We should not compromise with our dreams for the money or any material thing. The only key to success is to pursue our dreams and should not hesitate to pay the price for achieving them.

Now we are going to discuss this topic in more details. In our childhood we find ourselves in love with something we really enjoyed to do many times a day, without being tired and caring about the outcomes of the efforts we put to learn and do that. Everyone is born with some natural talent and besides we keep growing and we keep avoiding those natural skills we had because of some myths. We think that if I will do thing in the age of 20 years which we used to do in the age of 5 years then it would appear as childish behavior or people will start thinking that this person has gone crazy. Do you remember those days when you were child and loved to play in mud, follow butterflies, drawing something on paper? We loved to play in the peak seasons like summer, winter and rain without taking proper care of ourselves.

If we could not catch a glow worm once then we kept on trying unless we caught one. And if we could not catch it one day we tried to catch another next day without leaving the hope and without being showing the frustration of not able to catch one previous day. What happened that made us to leave all those hobbies we loved? Did you ever try to think about why we have changed? The answer is “What other will think/say”. This is one line which is capable of killing millions of dreams every day.

We never realized what made us to give-up that habit of persistent pursuance. In my opinion our natural habit replaced by one another habit and that is the habit of “Making others happy”. We quickly get used to it at the cost of leaving what we love. I don’t mean that we willfully leave it but we leave that habit because of fear and love. We give up those wonderful habits on the instructions from our parents to whom we love the most and because of the fear of being insulted by our relatives. So to avoid making them angry or sarcastic we start leaving what we loved. Parents start forcing us to do what they believe is right!

Another problem arises when we start going to school. In India, the subjects are mostly common till 10th standard in all board in every state. So neither our parents nor we take the pain to reach the conclusion that which area of education we should choose post matriculation. Suddenly in the haste we expect our parents to help us in deciding what which area of education is more worth it to choose. Our parents approach someone in our relationship or their friend circle and that person will decide what should be our area of study even without knowing what we love at all. It means that our parents, relative and we our self are faulty of this decision.

Some of us dare to take the decision ourselves but that is influenced by our classmates or friends. This is also not an independent decision we made. So we choose our stream of education by either following what our parents decide or what our friends want us to do. We completely forget about our interests and ignore the importance of choosing the area of education. Passing a course and obtaining a degree doesn’t mean that we have developed our interest in the subject. Suddenly we decide to choose the education stream which we were not familiar at all.

Our education system doesn’t encourage us to learn what we love. Teachers and professors hardly encourage us to follow our heart. Teachers come on the third place after parent and friends who spend maximum time with us. They also don’t take care about whether we are interested in the course we are pursuing. They teach us what has been written in the books 50 years back. So education is system is outdated and impractical. I want you to answer this question to yourself. Are all those things are still the same as they were 50 years back?

Post the completion of our formal education we get the job in the area we are certified. We still don’t try to apply our mind to listen what our heart want us to do. I didn’t mean that our heart have the capacity to think, I merely mean the emotional mind. So instead of correcting our mistakes we still keep making mistakes by sticking to the decision we have made in choosing the education stream. Some of us become successful in their job and some don’t. But both these people keep complaining that their jobs are not interesting. It is the time they realize that something is wrong! We don’t feel like working on the same job anymore.

Even after this realization we still keep working where we are. This is more painful that we have realized that this is not something we want to do but we still do nothing about that. It destroys our passion eventually. We either end up without being promoted or get promoted but in both of the situations we feel unsatisfied and frustrate. We bounds ourselves to our self-made difficulties that we have responsibility to raise our family and if we leave the current job we might not get the job in our area of interest or that job wouldn’t offer me the compensation I am getting in current job. I might not do the job with the perfection I was doing in current job. Shortly I might be jobless! This is the biggest fear of being jobless or unsuccessful in the area of interest.

What we left with post our retirement are a few bucks in our bank account, well-educated children and a house property built from the earnings from salary. Post the retirement these people will be sitting at home as an ignored and useless object, nobody will come to them for any advice and they will wait to die. I simply want to understand from you that “Is this the only purpose of your life?” You would have done something in others point of view but ideally you did not do anything for yourself. Now I would like to let you know how passionate people think and what they do.

A person who is following his dreams don’t care about money and he like to invest more time in the pursuance of his passion. His dream is not just to just to make his life comfortable but to do what he loves whether it makes him to come out of his comfort zone. Undoubtedly he will be ready to pay any price for it! He never let to die the child inside him who keeps him forcing to persistently achieve his dreams. He becomes more determinant because he make every major decision on his own and he knows what he want to do and how it would impact his life and what is the cost he will have to pay for it. Such self-reliance makes him very clear on what he wants to achieve in his life. He has a clear vision about the life.

The motive of the life is not just get-up every day, go to office to do the stuff whether we like to do it or not. We are human beings, the superior over all the creatures god have created on this earth. Even being superior if we are not capable of doing what we like then what is the use of this superiority. Let me ask you some questions and honestly answer them to yourself:

Q. 1. Do you get-up every day and feel excited to go to work?
Q. 2. Do you deserve what you have acquired so far?
Q. 3. Do you have freedom to do anything you want to do?
Q. 4. Are you able to make decisions quickly and implement them immediately?
Q. 5. Do you think you should continue with what are you doing now?

If your answer is no for all the above questions that means you seriously need to change something whether your habits or your job.
