Jermaine Jenas has advised Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to transform himself into a specialist midfielder for Liverpool.
The Merseyside outfit signed the England international in a £40m deal from Liverpool’s title rivals Arsenal on transfer deadline day in the summer.
The 24-year-old opted to move to Liverpool ahead of a potential switch to defending Premier League champions Chelsea or signing a new deal with Arsenal.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has used the attacking midfielder sparingly in his fledgling Reds career so far after five substitutes appearances in the Premier League.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made his only start in a 2-0 loss to Leicester City in the League Cup third round, while the 24-year-old midfielder has made three appearances of the bench in the Champions League.
The 24-year-old midfielder opened his Liverpool account with a close-range finish in a 7-0 win against Maribor in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is facing competition from Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield, while Naby Keita will arrive from RB Leipzig next summer.
Former Spurs star Jenas believes Oxlade-Chamberlain needs to build a reputation as a midfielder who can do a specific job for Klopp in the Liverpool team in big games.
“The best situation he can create himself is be the go to player for the big games to do a specific job,” Jenas told BT Sport.
“He isn’t as good as Mane or Salah but he might bring something else. A bit more security as well as an attacking option in big games.”
