Charlie Nicholas: Arsene Wenger needs to spend big on these three Arsenal signings

Charlie Nicholas has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign two strikers and a centre-half in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners boss signed five players in last summer’s transfer window as Arsenal looked to close the gap on their title rivals after last season’s second-placed finish.

The north London side have failed to kick on despite bringing in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka and Valencia centre-half Shkodran Mustafi.

Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League table and five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in pursuit of a place in next season’s Champions League competition.

Wenger’s side crashed out of the Champions League last week after a 10-2 loss to Bayern Munich over two legs of their Champions League in the last 16.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes the Gunners need to sign Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe, plus Real Madrid defender Rafael Varane.

“Don’t go in with some half-baked attempts to sign players this time. Go to Lyon and give them what they want for Alexandre Lacazette and do the same to get Kylian Mbappe from Monaco,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Arsenal need a left-back as well. I would sell Kieran Gibbs and have Nacho Monreal as a squad player. They need another genuine centre-back and I’d spend £50-60m on Rafael Varane rather than pay £30m for somebody who doesn’t really improve you team.”

The Gunners are 16 points adrift of leaders Chelsea in the title race.
