Arsenal and Arteta Tease the Media With the Usual Smoke and Mirrors Transfer Antics

In a world where secrets are few, Arsenal football club and their manager Mikel Arteta appear to be experts in the art of misinformation and deception, especially during a transfer window.

Edu has all but disappeared as Mikel Arteta, fresh from isolation, hands out clues like a parking warden dispensing tickets in a busy street in Kensington. He hints and underlines his vague intentions without suggesting targets and indicates that the club are about to add new additions if available to his remarkably youthful squad.

The press are more inclined to attend Arteta’s press conferences these days after the recent upturn in fortunes and the sudden realisation by the journalist that the ‘process’ the Spaniard outlined on his arrival was more than a polished sound bite.

Arteta remains wary of the press and plays the game with a comfortable brilliance by offering what is known in cricket terms as a straight bat to fend off awkward questions. He would prove to be a formidable poker player and might even be able to school a politician in the art of distraction and deflection.

Arsenal have been linked with a host of players said to be available in this transfer window and some of those may well have been fed through to the press to draw their gaze away from the genuine targets. It’s said that Arsenal have two priority deals in the pipeline and that steps have been taken to secure those targets before the window slams shut on the 31st of January.

We’ve all been fed the Bruno Guimaraes transfer story which is plausible but whilst pondering the details, we learn about Arsenal bidding for Palmeiras’ Danilo and upon looking at the player, it’s clear that the defensive midfielder ticks a great many of requirements for Arteta.

The 20-year-old leggy Brazilian is a confident and determined ball-winner who executes the basics perfectly. He is a balanced and technically-gifted player who would be classed as an Xhaka upgrade and is streets ahead of Elneny. Danilo also looks to be ahead of Lokonga in his development, although the pair could very well be considered the eventual pairing in the framework of Arsenal’s spine.

He looks taller than 1.77m and although he looks lean, he has a physical presence reminiscent of, dare I say it, Patrick Vieira. The players have different styles, but there are glimpses and flashes that stir a wealth of fabulous memories.

Edu has an advantage in the South American market and particularly in Brazil. He is constantly updated on the available talent and the sources he uses today are the same as when he unearthed Gabriel Martinelli.

Yet, the Arsenal transfer cloak reveals the most obvious but obscures the genuine targets and with Arsenal’s transfer successes in the summer, any interest the North London club have in a player this window will attract the unwanted attention of other clubs.

Arsenal are intent on securing the services of Dusan Vlahovic with recent reports of a transfer breakthrough but don’t rule out Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak and Lille’s Jonathan David as Edu and Arteta look to resolve their long-term strike issues.

It’s clear Arsenal need reinforcements but it’s another complicated period of in’s and out’s, money recouped and money spent and although the owners can offset the outgoings with their own cash, it’s not in their business model. However, the Kroenke’s are aware that the ‘Arteta project’ is missing vital elements and it may require a further injection of cash which we are led to believe has received a green light.
