T.J. Lang expects to miss OTAs, but ‘on schedule’ to make training camp

The new Lions guard is on schedule to participate in Training Camp in June.

The Detroit Lions took a risk when they handed T.J. Lang a three-year, $28.5 million contract in March. Back in January, Lang underwent hip surgery for a nagging injury that may have limited his play during the 2016 season.

It was unclear how long that surgery would sideline Lang, but the veteran guard cleared things up a bit during his Press Conference with the Lions media on Tuesday. When asked how he was recovering from his surgery, Lang said, “Definitely on schedule, if not, a little ahead.”

So what can the Lions expect in terms of a timeline? Lang said later in the press conference that he’s a little disappointed that he won’t be able to participate in organized team activities, which typically take place from mid May to mid June. However, Lang still expects to be ready to compete before the preseason. “The goal is still to be ready by training camp,” Lang said. Training camp typically takes place in July.

Earlier in the week, we learned that the injury was part of the reason the Packers offered Lang an “embarrassingly low” contract that had several injury protections built in. However, the move allegedly angered both coaches and players in Packers the locker room.

Meanwhile, the reaction in Detroit has been overwhelmingly positive. Lang joked, “It was awesome to see that kind of reception when I did sign here, but at the same time, I’m an offensive lineman.”
