Norwich’s finest, Catherine Roseanne Dennis – better known as Cathy Dennis – celebrates her 48th birthday today. Her first hit was as featured vocalist with D Mob, aka Dancin’ Danny D (real name Daniel Poku) who was fresh from two big club/chart hits in “We Call It Acieed” and “It Is Time To Get Funky”. It wouldn’t be their only collaboration; “That’s The Way Of The World” narrowly missed the top forty in 1990, whilst “Why?” made number 23 in 1994.

“C’mon And Get My Love” was, perhaps surprisingly, a bigger hit in the States than in the UK – on the Billboard Hot 100 it got to number ten. In fact, Dennis’ first three solo singles also fared better in America – “Just Another Dream” (UK #13, US #9), “Touch Me (All Night Long)” (UK #5, US #2), and “Too Many Walls” (UK #17, US #8). The hits continued in the UK through to her cover of The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset” in 1997, a year in which she also guest-hosted Top of the Pops.

However, her success has continued as a songwriter, writing or co-writing some massive chart hits, such as Kylie’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”, Britney’s “Toxic”, S Club 7’s “Two In A Million”, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”, plus many more for the likes of Will Young, Rachel Stevens, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, David Guetta, and plenty of others.
