Facebook has been on a crusade to take over Snapchat’s user base since the past year. They’ve already added the Stories feature to each one of their four platforms and it seems like the move has succeeded. Facebook today announced that Instagram Stories (which is only eight months old) has surpassed over 200 Million daily active users which essentially makes it more popular than Snapchat itself.

The number is collectively measured by taking into account someone either posting an update to their story or viewing a friend’s from the carousel at the top of the app. As of the last quarter of 2016, Snapchat roughly had 158 Million daily active users which is significantly south of what Instagram is at today. However, that metric isn’t solely based on people who post Stories, it also includes users who are using Snapchat for exchanging ephemeral messages or for the calling features. Instagram, on the other hand, services a total of 600 Million people and considering that the one-third of these are using Stories, is quite astonishing.

Apart from this, Instagram is today also rolling out a slew of selfie features for Stories. In the latest update, you can turn your selfies into stickers and use them in your next story or trade faces with someone in that post. This will also work in videos where you’ll be able to pin these selfie stickers to a specific spot in your video, add text, emoji and whatnot. Moreover, geostickers (also copied from Snapchat) are now available in four more cities including Chicago, London, Madrid or Tokyo and there’s now a quick shortcut to your most used stickers as well.

It’s difficult to be in Snapchat’s position right now, however, as I have mentioned in one of my articles before, Stories on Instagram make much more sense. Artists and photographers are extensively utilizing it for providing a glimpse of what goes on behind the next trending picture they have posted. Additionally, given Instagram’s user base, advertisers too consider it a better place to showcase their products.

These updates will be available in the Instagram version 10.16 for iOS in the Apple App Store and version 10.16.1 for Android in Google Play.
