What is bag water filter treatment?

Bag water filter treatment is when one or more bag filters are placed inside a bag filter housing to remove suspended solids from water. Specific bag filters vary depending on the industry in which they are used. This filtration method is both versatile and cost-effective for filtering lots of water quickly. They’re great for reducing the amount of silt, sand, dirt and other types of sediment in your water.

Bag water filter treatment is an efficient method to reduce particles in large volumes of water at a high flow rate. Other filtration methods are not as cost-effective for such high volumes of water. Bag water filters are a great option for industrial applications, brewing, pre-filtering, and more.

Think of bag water filter treatment as a way to remove the big stuff in a large volume, high flow rate of water – it’s not specialist filtration.

Benefits of bag water filter treatment

There are a few, significant benefits of bag water filter treatment. These include:

Disadvantages of bag water filter treatment

Most significantly, bag water filter treatment does not remove fine particles, bacteria, or chemicals. (If small particles, bacteria, or chemicals are not an issue in your water, then disregard this point). Cartridge or membrane filtration provides more precise results including the ability to remove fine particles, bacteria, or chemicals. Cartridges and membranes are at a greater expense though, so it’s important to weigh what the end goal is with budget. What applications is bag water filter treatment for?

Bag water filter treatment is ideal for commercial, industrial, and municipal filtration applications that require a cost-effective way to filter large volumes of water at a high flow rate. Such applications include:

• Pre-filtration
• Brewing
• Non-critical cleaning of a final product
• Removal of coarse particles which could potentially damage your equipment
• Removal of challenging pollutants from a liquid stream
• Groundwater
• Cooling water
• Industrial process water
• Wastewater

Can I use a bag water filter system to treat the water at my house?

Bag water filter systems are used mostly for industrial filtration, but there are some residential filtration applications too.

Bag water filters are great for filtering large quantities of water rapidly (50 – 2,400 gallons of water per minute). Bag water filter treatment is not always suited or practical for residential water applications though. The cost-effectiveness of a bag water filter treatment system comes from the massive quantity of water it filters. So if you’re not using a ton of water, you’re not going to see the savings.

Depending on the amount of water you use and the water quality, let’s explore whether a bag water filter may or may not be good for your situation…

A bag water filter system is good if you use at least 50 gallons per minute of water in your household on a regular basis. This may be the case if you have a large home or mansion (i.e., 8,000+ square feet), lots of people and appliances in your household using water, or an application that requires lots of water (a water feature, swimming pool, etc.).

Another factor is water quality. If your water has lots of suspended particles, you could benefit from a bag filter. If you get your water from a non-municipal source such as a well, a bag water filter can provide the first line of defense against particles before it undergoes more specialist treatment based on your water conditions. By pre-filtering the water, it puts less stress on your primary water filtration system meaning the filter cartridges will last longer.

So if you use at least 50 GPM of water in your household AND have a lot of suspended particles in your water, then you may benefit from bag water filter system. Depending on what’s in your water, a secondary, more precise cartridge or membrane filter should also be used, especially for drinking water.
