Don’t misjudge room size

Maybe you have always dreamt of a free-standing bathtub in your own bathroom and now since you’re about to renovate, it seems like the perfect time to install it. Even though you’ve always dreamt of this tub, don’t forget the size of your bathroom. If you have an apartment in an old building with a small bathroom, you might be better off with only a shower, instead of a free-standing bathtub. Make sure you are technically able to install walk-in-showers or bathtubs by having a talk with an expert. In older buildings, there is often not enough gradient or the floor is too thin. Since the bathroom is a frequently used room, you want it to be as easy, tidy and clean as possible. Consider leaving furniture away or moving it, so you will have enough space to move around without bumping into something. On the other hand, be sure you have enough storage space for your essential toiletries. Things that don’t have to be in your bathroom, store somewhere else. This will help your space look tidy and reduce your cleaning time!

Don’t mix different styles and colours

Before renovating, have an idea in mind and a plan what style you want to have in your new bathroom. Don’t mix the cosy looking cottage-style with the modern Scandinavian style, for example. One way to make sure your style is consistent is by matching your accessories with your fittings and fixtures. Consider selecting complimentary colours for your towels to go with your tiles to have the best colour mix in your bathroom. When choosing the colour, think about what mood you want to create. For most bathrooms, bright colours combined with a good amount of daylight will seal the deal!

Don’t go 'timeless'

Far too often all over the DIY-Renovation websites you read about how your bathroom has to be timeless. The tendency to design ‘timeless’ bathrooms rather than realising your own ideas and wishes and what is timeless for you is one of the most frequent mistakes. Forget about ‘timeless’ and instead choose something that you really like and can imagine in your home for the next 5 – 10 years! There is nothing such as a universal ‘timeless’ design and if you try to embrace it, chances are you’ll end up with something that you don’t like. During the seventies, experts sold bathrooms in curry-yellow, bright blue and light pink, which they called timeless. Today, light-yellow smooth rock is so-called ‘timeless’ and in ten years it will be bright-fawn. Have the courage to do what you like!
