What is Sleep Deprivation and How to Deal

In today’s age, a lot of us aren’t getting enough sleep and it can absolutely affect multiple areas of our life. Not getting enough sleep can raise our stress levels, cause weight gain, and affect our thinking. Getting enough Sleep is especially important if you have a very busy lifestyle. The more active you are, the more sleep is necessary for you to have.

What is sleep deprivation?

Sleep Deprivation also known as insufficient sleep is the condition of not getting enough sleep to help keep your body healthy.

When you are sleep deprived here are some symptoms you may experience:

  • Hallucinations – is the perception of something that is not really present in the environment, as opposed to an illusion, which is the misinterpretation of something that is present.
  • Memory problems – you can have problems with your short term or long term memory depending on how long you are sleep deprived.
  • Daytime sleepiness/fatigue – Feeling tired all day, or feeling like you don’t have any energy to do simple tasks.
  • Increase pain – Sleep deprivation can increase pain that you may already be experiencing.
  • Mood swings –  you’ll get grumpy more frequently. When we do not sleep enough, we are more likely to have symptoms of irritability. On the other hand, a good night’s sleep may put us in a great mood as we start our day.

How to eliminate sleep deprivation?

To start getting the sleep you need to recharge and reenergize yourself, here are some great tips:

  1. Create a peaceful sleep space. Have blackout curtains, invest in comfy sheet, and have aromatherapeutic scents like lavender lingering in the air.
  2. Get regular exercise, no more than 3 hours before bedtime.
  3. Get ready for bed at the same time every night, if possible.
  4.  Stay Away From Over the count or pharmaceutical sleep aids, this will only make things worse in the long run. Try natural remedies instead.
  5. Noise Matters, sound play a huge role in how relaxed we feel. It’s best to fall asleep with a silent night or find soft music to lightly play in the background, that will smooth your mind.
