Can Tooth Colored Fillings be Whitened?

Do you find it awkward to smile because of your discolored teeth? It is important that we keep to aesthetics when we have artificial feelings and crowns because they rarely lose their sheen. The surrounding Teeth, however, are not that fortunate because they can suffer from discoloration, making your smile look askew. Teeth have a natural white color which can be retained by good oral health. However, increased tartar and plaque deposits can stain the teeth, robbing it of its natural healthy color.

One of the most common reasons of tooth discoloration is decay of the underlying bones of the teeth, killing the affected teeth in the process. Your dentist can easily treat this problem. But even when the tooth is not damaged, your dentist might still recommend that you get a cleaning and whitening treatment to bring the tooth back to its natural healthy color. If the cause is decay, further treatments might be needed to completely restore the affected teeth.

Dental implants are generally made of porcelain so they do not lose their color and will not require any whitening treatments. However, keeping tabs on the surrounding teeth might show a discrepancy in color because they can naturally lose their color and will require regular cleaning treatments to retain their aesthetics.

Bonded fillings prevent the use whitening treatments. Replacements will have to be done when the difference in colors becomes too apparent or if the surrounding teeth are in danger of being decayed or damaged. Artificial crowns and veneers are better options for whitening treatments because they are hardier and are less susceptible to complications to any treatments applied.

As a general rule, bonded fillings in themselves cannot be whitened. But if you are looking for an aesthetic makeover, you might have to get a complete overhaul to blend your artificial teeth with your natural ones. Of course, this will depend on the current condition of your teeth, among many other factors.

There are many DIY teeth whitening kits available at your local pharmacy that can give you good results even on artificial teeth. Keep in mind, though, that these kits are generalized and may come with a higher concentration of whitening chemicals that can cause harm on your teeth. Therefore, it is best that you get a reputable dental care professional to customize a teeth whitening kit for you to directly administer the medication to your teeth and gums, even when you are at home.
