When is Valentine’s Day? Is it always Feb 14?

Valentine’s Day can be one of the most exciting holidays for couples and possibly a bit of a drag for people who are single (unless you see it as an opportunity!). Whether you’re worried about when you need to buy a gift, plan a date, or hide in your basement—you need to know when Valentines Day is! In this guide, we’ll talk about when Valentine’s Day is for this year, when it is for upcoming years, and whether or not it always falls on the same day.

When is Valentine’s Day in 2022?

Valentine’s Day in 2022 falls on February 14th, which is a Monday.

Is Valentine’s Day Always on February 14th?

For many holidays, they always fall on the same calendar number day every year. For other holidays, they fall on a particular time during the month. A great example of the first is Christmas, which always falls on December 25th no matter if that’s a Sunday, Tuesday, or whatever. An example of the second holiday scheduling is Thanksgiving, which is always held on the 4th Thursday of November, regardless of whether that’s the 24th, 25th, etc.

So, where does Valentine’s Day fall in this? It’s much like Christmas where it falls on the same calendar day every year. No matter what day of the week it is, Valentine’s Day is always on February 14th—no matter what. If you look at the three most recent Valentine’s Day dates, you’ll see that’s the case:

  • V-Day 2021: Sunday, February 14th
  • V-Day 2020: Friday, February 14th
  • V-Day 2019: Thursday, February 14th

Why is Valentine’s Day on February 14th Every Year?

The answer to this question goes way back in history to the time of Pope Gelasius I. There was an ancient Pagan festival called Lupercalia that was held in Rome every year on February 15th to “purify the city.” Pope Gelasius I decided to replace that festival with the Festival of the Purification. In light of the new holiday, the Pope changed the date to February 14th and said that the festival would be held in honor of St. Valentine (the patron Saint of lovers).

And, thus, we have the birth of what we now call Valentine’s Day that’s a holiday celebrating love that’s held on February 14th every single year.

When Was the First Valentine’s Day?

Pop Gelasius I ruled during the late 5th century. Current history states that the first celebration of the new holiday was in 496 AD.

Is Valentine’s Day the Same Day in the US and the Rest of the World?

Yes, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the same day in the United States and all other countries around the world that celebrate the holiday. While many believe that V-day is a US holiday, it was actually created in Rome.
