There was a fuss on the internet last week especially by movie buffs when Netflix, the world’s top on-demand video streaming service announced that her services would be launched in 130 more countries including Nigeria. In addition to Pay-Tv and cinemas, we can now enjoy Netflix Nigeria!

Netflix which is an American multinational provider of on-demand Internet streaming media has its headquarters in Los Gatos, California and was established in 1997. Netflix started its subscription-based service in 1999. By 2009, Netflix had over 10 million subscribers already.

In a bid to expand its services, the top notch on-demand internet streaming Media Company at the 2016 edition of the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) which was held in the USA announced that it would be extending its services to 130 more countries including Nigeria.

Some other countries where Netflix introduced its services also include: included Singapore, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Russia and India amongst others.

Netflix allows users a whole lot of flexibility as it works on various sizes of screens ranging from smartphones to smart televisions. Other devices such as the PlayStation and Apple TV are not left out as it also works perfectly with them.

Netflix Nigeria: The Death of Pay-Tv?

The announcement of Netflix Nigeria was followed by mixed reactions. Many welcomed the development and others saw it as the beginning of the end of Pay-Tv in Nigeria.

Many believe that the arrival of Netflix Nigeria would bring about a huge declination in the number of customers Pay-Tv services such as DSTV, GoTV, CTV amongst others have; this belief is however clouded by so much fallacy. The only possibility is that competition might place a check on the steady hike of prices by Pay-Tv service providers.

It must be mentioned that in other countries such as USA where Netflix has been launched in previous years, Pay-Tv has as well been thriving.

Netflix Nigeria: What is the Cost of Service?

Netflix has 3 subscription plans from which customers can make an informed choice based on their preferences. A Basic Plan costs $7.99 per month with unlimited access to movies and TV series, a Standard Plan costs $9.99 per month, while a Premium Plan costs $11.99 per month. Whether you subscribe to Basic, Standard of Premium Netflix plan, you can be sure to have the “first month free” trial.

Also important to note is that high volume of reliable and stable data would be needed to stream videos as the amount mentioned above is just the ‘Cost of Access’.

Etisalat Nigeria has already announced a data bundle that allows users enjoy up to 2 hours of video streaming on Netflix for as low as N400.

Netflix Nigeria: How to Watch the Content/Download App?

Netflix content can be viewed on Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops, Desktops, TV’s and other smart devices. Just download the free Netflix app on your Smart TV, Game console, Smartphone, Tablet or your streaming device.

To view on a television other than a Smart TV, yoke your TV to an Android box or Apple TV.  You can also enjoy the service on your TV by using an MHL or HDMI cable to connect your TV to a Game Console, Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone.

Netflix Nigeria: Will the Content be Censored?

There may not be a lot of censored content on Netflix as part of the sign-up process allows you to specify if you are above 18 although every media on Netflix has its rating. However, while creating a profile Netflix lets you identify children so that they don’t get access to any adult content.

Netflix Nigeria: Will the service include Local Content?

Considering the fact that Netflix has more than 43 million of its 69.17 million subscribers in the USA, there may not be a lot of local content, at least not as at the time this article was published.

Netflix Nigeria: Our Take

In as much as we welcome Netflix Nigeria, we should be rest assured that Pay-Tv would still remain here with us. What might pose the greatest problem to potential Nigerian Netflix customers is the problem of data. The access fee set by Netflix is quite affordable, but it might not be so easy to see an affordable, reliable and stable internet data provider in Nigeria. We hope the ISP’s and Network providers step up their game and ensure a positive Netflix experience in Nigeria.
