Times they are a Changing. Did you know that the old "Job for life" is becoming something of the Past. Even the public sector is catching on and are offering fewer permanent positions than before.

The recent down turn in the economy, put pay to that. Many employers have restructured and now are looking for value for money, even the public sector.

Is this a good thing or bad thing?, well that depends on perspective.

My Father worked for the same company for 35 years. In his time he helped build the company from a small business to the biggest architectural firm in the area. He was the person that all clients and prospective clients wanted to see, all the time. He wasn't a great delegator and did take on a lot. The firm did grow to around 70 employees strong. My father designed many fine buildings in his day and the firm won awards.

After 22 years, my father was made a partner in the firm, but this wasn't worth the paper it was written on, and it meant that he only took on more work, whilst the senior partner (owner) spent his time travelling the World, spending my fathers' share.

My father eventually retired at 65, and he could have worked on but he was totally despondent with the firm, he built, as there were no profits to be had.

He left a broken man, sad to say and he passed away 8 years later. His retirement was miserable as he was full of regrets at what he could have done differently in his life and all the opportunities he let by, as he was loyal to the firm and the "Man"

I miss my Dad every day, and I DO NOT want to die working for the "Man", like he did, and I'm sure he doesn't want me to either. I have a permanent position, which I gained before the economic meltdown, in 2007. In my comfort zone, I could easily follow in my father's footsteps and stick to a job for life. I'm not as sought after as he was nor held such prestige, but I do work in a difficult career and the risk of "burn out" are very real.

So I asked the question earlier, is the end of "job for life" a good thing, and I say yes. People need change, people need challenges, people need inspiration and people need motivation.

Wayne Dyer quoted "Don't die with the music still in you" and he is right. Life is meant to be lived and not endured, we only get one crack at it, there are no dress rehearsals.
