Thirty-eight people in Algeria have been sentenced to death for their involvement in the 2021 killing of Djamel Bensmail, who was falsely accused of starting deadly forest fires. Bensmail had volunteered to fight the fires, which killed at least 90 people, but was beaten and set on Fire by a mob. The gruesome murder sparked outrage and led to the viral hashtag #JusticePourDjamelBenIsmail. Out of the 94 defendants, 27 were acquitted, and the remaining 29 received jail terms ranging from 3 to 20 years. The Death Sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment due to Algeria's moratorium on capital punishment.
