Air quality issues, horse safety concerns complicate start of Belmont Stakes

Air quality issues caused by wildfires and Horse Safety Concerns are overshadowing this year's Belmont Stakes, which was meant to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown victory. The racing industry has come under increasing scrutiny due to a recent spike in horse fatalities, with Churchill Downs suspending racing operations and moving its meet to Ellis Park following 12 horse fatalities last month. Meanwhile, air quality concerns caused by Canadian wildfires caused the cancellation of racing at Belmont Park on Thursday, but resumed on Friday thanks to improved conditions. The race is set to take place on Saturday evening.
