Brazilian Protest Continues: What Is The Reason Behind?

Brazilians have been protesting for a couple of weeks in support of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the election with a very thin lead from Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Thousands of people blocked roads, bypassed security barricades, climbed on roofs, smashed windows and invaded government buildings, which were believed to be largely vacant on the weekend. Some demonstrators called for a military intervention to either restore the far-right Mr Bolsonaro to power or bring down Mr Lula from the presidency.

Lula was crowned as President 20 years ago and is now set to come back, but many people are not happy with this and are protesting against what they call a stolen election and calling for the country’s armed forces to intervene. Lula’s leftist credentials drive protesters, for they fear he will Bring Communism to the country.

A Brazilian journalist ‘Marcelo Elizardo’ said- “People believe the election was a scam. There is a belief among protesters that the elected government could bring communism. They are mainly driven by conspiracy theories, disseminated through Telegram and other (messaging) groups.”

Regarding the protest, Narendra Modi expressed deep concern in a statement on Twitter━ “Deeply concerned about the news of rioting and vandalism against the State institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone. We extend our full support to the Brazilian authorities.”

Hundreds of people were arrested who were found blocking the roads and bypassing security barricades. Brazil Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes decided on Sunday to remove Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days, alleging security flaws that allowed the invasion of government buildings.
